13-year-old shot on bus in front of 7-year-old sister, police say

The 13-year-old Miami-area girl killed in a Tuesday morning school bus shooting was riding with her 7-year-old sister, police told reporters at a televised news conference.

Police said another student on the bus, a boy, was the shooter and that investigators found his gun and arrested him, but few other details were immediately available; police hadn’t questioned him yet.

The shooting happened around 6:45 a.m., police said, as the private bus was at 137th Avenue and Southwest 296th Street in Homestead, Fla., south of Miami.

Eight other students were riding the bus and were uninjured, police told reporters, and all their families have been contacted. Police said all the students on board had been taken to the Miami-Dade Police Department for questioning about the shooting.

A lawyer for Somerset Academy Silver Palms, a public charter school, told NBC Miami that the yellow bus carried students for three schools, and police told reporters that the girl went to the Palm Glades Preparatory Academy.

She was airlifted to Miami Children’s Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Officials at the Palm Glades Preparatory Academy could not immediately be reached for comment.

Police said the bus wasn’t equipped with a camera.
