Dad banned from rival school after rooting for a shooting

This just in from the Department of Bad Ideas: Don’t yell “fire” in a theater, don’t say “bomb” in an airport, and definitely don’t make a Facebook post saying that you’re hoping for a school shooting.

An unidentified 39-year-old man was banned from Washington state’s Camas High School grounds and briefly investigated by police after posting a rant on Facebook after a basketball game:

“Camas fans!!!!! Worst in the league!!!! I hope someone shoots up their school real soon!!!!!!!!!!”

The author was the father of a player on the rival Skyview High School team, which beat Camas 44-42, according to the Oregonian, and he got in an argument with opposing fans while leaving the game.

According to a screengrab of the post from KATU-TV -- in which the man’s name was blurred out -- the rant was posted under Facebook’s “public” setting, meaning it could have been seen by anyone on the Web.

The man was promptly banned from Camus School District property and drew police scrutiny, but investigators said Thursday that he wouldn’t be charged.

Sgt. Scott Boyles with the Camas Police Department told KGW-TV that the father’s post “did not reach the level of criminal action.”

He reportedly apologized to police, calling the post “stupid.” He had deleted it within hours, according to the Oregonian.

“In no way shape or form do I wish harm on any human being,” he wrote a few hours later. “Except terrorist [sic] who hurt people.“

Camas school officials showed concern, but didn’t see the threat as credible.

Josh Gibson, Camas School District’s athletic director, told the Oregonian, “Our top priority lies with the safety of our students, and we’ve been in contact with local police, but obviously this is a clear case of very poor judgment.”
