Readers React: Gabriel Garcia Marquez fans
Re “Literary master of magical realism,” Obituary, April 18
A dogeared paperback edition of Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s “Love in the Time of Cholera” has traveled with me on countless adventure trips and rests within easy reach of my watercolors.
I have traveled the world and drifted into my best creativity accompanied by the inestimable Marquez. When things get the better of me, or I feel the need of an interesting companion, I simply open “Cholera” or “One Hundred Years of Solitude” and slip into worlds only Marquez could imagine and only he could explain.
I am confident that wherever his spirit now rests, there is an engaging conversation already underway. Thankfully for me, Marquez remains at arm’s length, and will continue to be there for the rest of my life.

Marquez opened us up to magical realism and the power of dreams. His passing reminds us to dream. As Marquez said, “It is not true people stop pursuing dreams because they grow old; they grow old because they stop pursuing dreams.”
