Readers React: It’s the cellphone use -- not the talking -- that’s risky

To the editor: Robin Abcarian’s piece sounds like another David and Goliath story, but it sends the wrong message.

The state Court of Appeal was literally correct in ruling that a ticket should only be given if a driver is “talking and listening” on a wireless telephone. The scientific research is clear, however, that the accident-causing aspect of cellphone use in cars is the distraction from driving that it causes.

So, rather than celebrating a Davidian victory, Abcarian would have served her readers better by emphasizing that any cellphone use while driving is dangerous.
