Readers React: Stan Chambers: a newsman and a gentleman

To the editor: Many years ago I was assigned a story for the Pasadena Star-News. Longtime KTLA journalist Stan Chambers was going to be grand marshal in the Route 66 Parade that year. He invited me up to KTLA and I did the story, though mostly I was awed by his very friendly manner and interest in my career. (“Stan Chambers dies at 91; newsman had six-decade career at KTLA,” Feb. 13)

I told him how, growing up in L.A. in the 1950s and ‘60s, the big events were the disasters we watched on TV: the Baldwin Hills dam failure, the Bel-Air wildfire and more. I also told him how much my widowed mother always enjoyed his newscasts.

A few days later my mother told me Chambers had called her, complimented me and talked to her for nearly 30 minutes. It was one of her cherished memories.

Yes, Chambers was a great newsman. He was also a gentleman, and I will always be grateful for his support and his conversation with my elderly mother.
