Readers React: The DWP provides clean water and reliable power. Does it need fixing?

To the editor: The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power does its job: It provides water and power to the 4 million people who live in Los Angeles. We count on getting water when we turn on the tap and power when we flip the switch. (“It’s time to give the DWP a reboot,” Opinion, Feb. 15)

The DWP has blown it on billing accuracy and customer service, but residents of Los Angeles get clean water and uninterrupted power (for the most part).

I respect op-ed article authors Mickey Kantor and Austin Beutner, but I differ strongly with them on two of their reform proposals. How can five independent commissioners run the DWP better than the current volunteer board? Where is the accountability? Best business practices would never support entrusting this huge, vital public utility to such divided authority.

As for hiring outside the civil service process, remove it and you are asking for disaster.

Let’s keep the focus on what is really important. Providing clean water and reliable power will not be improved by these proposals.
