GOP edges out Democrats in poll

With the GOP gaining a four-point advantage in the “generic’’ congressional contest -- a landscape reminiscent of the Republican romps of 1994 and 2002 -- the Democrats are taking their fight to the passage of finacial regulatory reform.

The Democratic National Committee is airing ads starting today on cable news networks -- FOX News, MSNBC and CNN -- asking viewers to recall the near-collapse of the financial system in the fall of 2008.

And the union-backed Americans United for Change is airing ads on the cable outlets in Washington, where Congress has returned to a debate on the White House’s push for new financial regulatory reforms

All of this arrives with support for the Republicans in November -- in that generic test of which party’s candidates people say they are most likely to support -- is growing. The Gallup Poll today puts that generic advantage at 48 percent Republican, 44 Democrat.
