Orange County reports 10 new COVID-19 deaths in one day

The Orange County Health Care Agency reported a record 10 new deaths from COVID-19 on Wednesday, with nursing home residents making up most of the additional fatalities.

The grim rebound comes after two straight days with no reported COVID-19 deaths in Orange County, which has now seen 98 cumulative deaths from the disease caused by the novel coronavirus.

The single-day toll beats the region’s previous high-water mark of five deaths — which the county has reported multiple times over the course of the pandemic, most recently on May 8.

Seven of the 10 latest coronavirus deaths came from nursing home residents — the total number of COVID-19 deaths in skilled nursing facilities was 23 as of Tuesday and 30 as of Wednesday, according to county data. Fatal cases of COVID-19 continued to hit elderly patients hardest; more than half of all county deaths to date have been in people 75 or older. By age range, patients who have died were:

• 85 and up: 25
• 75 to 84: 28
• 65 to 74: 16
• 55 to 64: 14
• 45 to 54: 9
• 35 to 44: 4
• 34 and younger: 2

The healthcare agency also reported 249 new infections Wednesday and 775 additional tests over Tuesday. This brings Orange County to 4,742 cumulative known cases of COVID-19 and 86,694 total tests given. Daily updates are preliminary and subject to change as the county receives new information.

Reported hospitalizations were at 253, with 93 in intensive care. Wednesday’s figures came from all 25 hospitals eligible to report coronavirus cases.

• Santa Ana: 833 (24.7 cases per 10,000 residents)
• Anaheim: 751 (20.9 cases per 10,000 residents)
• Huntington Beach: 301 (14.8 cases per 10,000 residents)
• Irvine: 162 (5.8 cases per 10,000 residents)
• Newport Beach: 135 (15.5 cases per 10,000 residents)
• Costa Mesa: 81 (7 cases per 10,000 residents)
• Fountain Valley: 50 (8.8 cases per 10,000 residents)
• Laguna Beach: 44 (18.8 cases per 10,000 residents)
