Around Town: Veterans Day Run Saturday in Irvine
The fourth annual National Veterans Day Run in Irvine will come to William R. Mason Regional Park on Saturday. The event will offer a 5K (3.1-mile) race and a one-mile family walk/run. Racing will begin at 3:11 p.m.
Registration for the 5K is $30 for adults, $25 for military spouses and children younger than 18, $11 for veterans and active-duty military personnel and free for children 12 and younger. The mile race costs $11 to $25.
Donations will benefit Operation Gratitude, a nonprofit organization that sends care packages to troops deployed overseas. Last year, participants in the run helped raise more than $25,000 toward veterans programs, according to a news release.

Veterans Day event at fairgrounds
The OC Fair & Event Center in Costa Mesa will host a free Veterans Day celebration Tuesday featuring live music, free hot dogs and a chance to make holiday cards for ailing veterans and to send care packages to troops overseas.
The event is part of the Veterans + Labor – Partners in Service project launched in 2013, in which union members statewide participate in volunteer projects and other activities throughout Veterans Day weekend.
The celebration will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the fairgrounds event center, 88 Fair Drive.

Pretend City to host fundraising gala
Pretend City Children’s Museum in Irvine will present its Rock the City gala on Saturday, hosting Orange County philanthropists and business leaders for a rock music-inspired event with a live auction. Proceeds will benefit the museum.
The event will begin at 6 p.m. with cocktails, a silent auction and music, followed by dinner and a live auction at 7:30 and dancing at 9 p.m.
The museum is at 29 Hubble. Tickets are $500.

Tip-A-Cop to benefit Special Olympics
Newport Beach police officers will serve as hosts and servers from 5 to 9 p.m. Monday at Javier’s restaurant in Newport Beach in an annual Tip-A-Cop event to benefit Special Olympics activities in Orange County.
In July 2015, the Special Olympics World Games will be held in Los Angeles. For three days before the opening ceremony, Newport Beach will serve as a host city for Special Olympics athletes and support personnel. Past Newport Beach Tip-A-Cop events have raised nearly $10,000 a year for Special Olympics.

Newport group raises $300,000 for Big Brothers Big Sisters
Angelitos de Oro, a Newport Beach-based volunteer women’s auxiliary, raised $300,000 for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Orange County’s “High School Bigs” mentoring program during the group’s 13th annual Angelitos Card fundraiser Oct. 8-14 at South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa.
The Angelitos Card program consisted of more than 100 boutiques and restaurants at South Coast Plaza that offered 20% savings to Angelitos cardholders for one week. Participating stores included Bottega Veneta, Oscar de la Renta, Donna Karan, St. John, Giorgio Armani, Anne Fontaine, J.Crew and DKNY. The card was sold for $60, with all proceeds benefiting Big Brothers Big Sisters.

Costa Mesa restaurant to donate for diabetes research
Newport Rib Co. restaurant in Costa Mesa will help support the Orange County chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation throughout this month by donating $2 from sales of featured glasses of wine, desserts or beer flights, and $10 from the sale of featured bottles of wine.

Congressman to speak in Newport Beach
Rep. John Campbell (R-Irvine) will speak at a luncheon from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Nov. 13 at the Pacific Club, 4110 MacArthur Blvd., Newport Beach.
Campbell, who plans to retire after serving five terms in the House of Representatives, will reflect on his service in Washington, the state of politics, U.S. banking policy, the budget and economic conditions, according to a news release. He represents California’s 45th Congressional District.

Christian school schedules open house
Mariners Elementary School in Costa Mesa will present a Preview Night for parents of prospective students from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Nov. 13 at the school, 300 Fischer Ave. The private Christian school offers classes in kindergarten through eighth grade.
Preview Night guests can visit classrooms, meet teachers and administrators, tour the campus and ask questions of current parents and alumni.
