A-frame signs could come to Balboa Village
Newport Beach City Council members Wednesday will discuss an ordinance that would allow businesses in Balboa Village to use A-frame signs to attract customers.
The council voted 6-0 in October to make such street-level mini-billboards legal for businesses in Corona del Mar’s commercial areas, but restricted their use in other areas of the city.
At the time, Councilman Mike Henn asked city staff to bring forward a proposal that would allow Balboa Village businesses to test the signs for a year.
If the ordinance passes first and second readings, merchants will be allowed to post A-frame signs within 10 feet of the “primary entrance” of their businesses, as long as they’re at least three feet from other portable signs and they don’t block doorways necessary for people to enter or exit a building.
Businesses would be allowed only one sign not more than 48 inches tall or larger than 10 square feet. They also couldn’t have any attention-attracting devices attached to them, such as balloons or flags.
