Movember team aims to raise funds to aid men’s health
For the third year in a row, members of a Newport-Mesa-based “Movember” team are aiming to use their mustaches as a fundraising force.
Team Nuclear, which has about 200 members nationwide, throughout the month wants to raise $300,000 toward the Movember cause of promoting awareness of men’s health issues, such as prostate cancer.
The group has raised about $50,000 so far and was the No. 1 fundraising team in the United States in 2012 and 2013.
Team Nuclear, whose members include prostate cancer survivors and doctors who are stressing the importance of health screenings, has raised about $500,000 since its inception in 2010. The group is led by “Coach” John Cornuke.
The men grow mustaches to use as icebreakers for conversations about men’s health and donating toward men’s health awareness.
Members have several fundraisers coming up, including “Viva La Mo” poker night at 7 p.m. Saturday at 425 30th St., Newport Beach, and an event at 3 p.m. Sunday at Grit Cycle, 1731 Santa Ana Ave., Costa Mesa.
