Corona del Mar Today: Residents meeting to include Ocean Boulevard project update
A repaving and landscaping project planned for Ocean Boulevard in Corona del Mar will be the topic of the next Corona del Mar Residents Assn. board meeting, scheduled for 7:30 a.m. Nov. 20.
Newport Beach Public Works Director Dave Webb will be the guest speaker, providing an update on the project and answering questions.
The meeting will be held in the library room of the OASIS Senior Center, at Fifth and Marguerite avenues.
According to the Newport Beach city website, Corona del Mar street improvements will be done in two phases. The first will involve replacing concrete pavement on Ocean Boulevard and Marguerite Avenue and reconstructing deteriorated sidewalks, curbs and gutters.
The work is planned for Ocean Boulevard from Goldenrod to Marguerite avenues and Marguerite Avenue from Ocean Boulevard to East Coast Highway. The budget for this phase is $1.2 million.
The second phase will modify traffic lanes and parking configurations on Ocean Boulevard between Carnation and Dahlia avenues, the city website states.
“New landscaping will also be included to aesthetically enhance the wide segment of Ocean Boulevard,” the site states.
The project also will replace concrete pavement on “various streets in Corona del Mar,” as well as reconstruct sidewalks, curbs and gutters that have deteriorated.
The work will take place on stretches of Ocean Boulevard between Carnation and Goldenrod avenues, Marguerite and Poppy avenues, and Carnation and Fernleaf avenues. It will also take place on Carnation and Fernleaf avenues between Ocean Boulevard and Seaview Avenue, and on Poppy Avenue between Ocean and East Coast Highway.

Arrest on felony warrants
Newport Beach police Tuesday arrested a 29-year-old man wanted on three felony warrants issued by an outside agency.
He was apprehended at East Coast Highway and Marguerite Avenue at 12:04 a.m., police said.
Separately, police received a report of theft by false pretenses involving fraudulent repair work in the 800 block of Newport Center Drive. The incident occurred between 11:42 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Monday and resulted in a loss of $1,495, police said.

New cleaners replaces Sprint store
A dry-cleaning business called Mr. Best Cleaners has opened in the former Sprint shop at 2935 E. Coast Hwy.
The Sprint shop closed in March. It had opened in November 2012, replacing Holiday House Liquor, which closed in March 2011.
The location is next to an empty space that formerly housed Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf. The coffee shop closed in January.

Harbor View honors U.S. vets
Harbor View Elementary School held its 12th annual Veterans Day assembly Tuesday, with songs and salutes to veterans.
“Anything you can do to honor the brave men and women who served in our military, and anything you can do to teach our young people about their sacrifice, is our job as educators,” said Principal Todd Schmidt.
The assembly began with a flag ceremony, performed by members of Harbor View Cub Scout Troop 330, and students singing the Star-Spangled Banner.
Then 30 veterans, who were guests of honor, each introduced themselves. The Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines all were represented, and veterans told the students they had served in World War II, Vietnam, Korea, Iraq and in other military operations.
“I look at this audience,” said Vietnam veteran Santo “JR” Pagano, “and I think, ‘I’d go back in a minute.’”
The students then sang military songs and “America the Beautiful.”
Former Harbor View Principal Mellissia Christensen began the Veterans Day assemblies more than a decade ago, in part inspired by her uncle’s experiences in the military.
