Firefighters rescue 3 dogs in early morning blaze at West Coast Highway motel

Firefighters rescued three dogs from a blaze early Tuesday at a Newport Beach motel that burned several rooms.

The two-alarm fire was reported at about 5:30 a.m. at the Pine Knot Motel, at 6302 W. Coast Highway, according to the Newport Beach Fire Department.

Flames and heavy smoke were billowing from two of the rooms in the 12-unit motel when fire crews arrived. More than 40 firefighters from Newport Beach, Huntington Beach, Costa Mesa, Fountain Valley and the Orange County Fire Authority assisted in fighting the blaze.

All three westbound lanes of West Coast Highway were closed temporarily as crews worked to extinguish the fire, according to Newport Beach police.

Firefighters helped one person escape the blaze. Everyone was able to get out safely and no injuries were reported, authorities said.

All 12 rooms suffered smoke damage and about five were burned, according to the fire department.

Crews had the fire under control by about 7 a.m. Fire officials are investigating what started the blaze.
