Costa Mesa High junior running back C.J. Zuniga, who rushed for 868

of his 2,015 yards in four Pacific Coast League games, is among four

Newport-Mesa players to earn top individual honors on the Daily Pilot’s

All-PCL football selections.

Zuniga, a transfer from Arizona who scored 12 touchdowns in league, is

the Most Valuable Player.

Corona del Mar High senior tailback Grant Estabrook, whose 558 rushing

yards in league was second only to Zuniga, is the Offensive Player of the

Year.

Senior linemen Jay Bottom and Kyle Westman, who starred for CdM and

Estancia, respectively, are Defensive Co-Players of the Year.

Jerry Howell, who guided Costa Mesa to a share of the championship with

CdM, is the Coach of the Year. The Mustangs earned the league’s No. 1

playoff spot by beating CdM, 14-0, in the regular-season finale.

The 5-foot-10, 185-pound Zuniga burned Laguna Beach for 287 yards and

three TDs, went for 251 yards and five TDs against University and added

203 yards and two TDs in Mesa’s only league loss against Estancia. He

scored twice and finished with 127 yards against CdM.

Estabrook, a 6-2, 220-pound battering ram, topped the 100-yard mark

against all four league opponents, including a high of 183 against

University.

Bottom, a 6-3, 220-pound tackle, was a force in the middle for the Sea

Kings, who allowed just 33 points in league, 49 fewer than the league’s

second-stingiest defense.

Westman, a 6-3, 290-pound end and three-year varsity starter, played on

both sides of the ball for the Eagles. He was, however, most formidable

leading Estancia’s double flex defense.

In addition to the aforementioned standouts, Costa Mesa and CdM have

seven first-team honorees, while Estancia adds four more. Mesa and

Estancia are each represented by five players on the second team, which

also includes two Sea Kings.

Estancia senior running back Marshall Hendricks is a first-team pick. He

rushed for 476 yards and four TDs in league and turned both PCL

receptions into touchdowns, as well.

CdM senior Mike Hayes, a versatile performer who contributed on both

sides of the ball, was recognized on the first team for his blocking at

fullback.

CdM senior guards Brandon Johnson and Jason Kurtz, a three-year starter,

are joined by Sea King senior tackle Sean Fenton on the first-team

offensive line.

Mesa junior guard Luther Mitchell and senior tackle Eric Connaty are

additional first-team blockers, as is Estancia junior Robert Aguilera.

Defensively, five local linebackers are first-team picks, including

repeat first-teamers Dave Weir and Shaun Ferryman from Costa Mesa.

Weir, selected last season as a defensive back, is tabbed as an outside

linebacker this fall.

Ferryman, a first-team tight end a year ago, is honored for his play at

inside linebacker.

Estancia senior middle ‘backer Matt Mueller, who led the Eagles in

tackles, is another first-team choice, as are small-but-active CdM junior

outside ‘backers Blake Hacker and Nick Prosser.

Estancia junior end David Rodriguez and Mesa junior tackle Antony

Grubisich are first-team choices on the line, while CdM senior Adam

Cooper and Mesa senior Willy Franco, both safeties, are members of the

first-team secondary.

Luis Avalos, a second-team pick a year ago, is the first-team

place-kicker.

Sean Freeman, a senior wingback, is joined on the second-team offense by

teammate Cesar Romero, a junior guard.

Mesa offensive linemen Eliseo Martinez, a senior guard, and Charlie

Amburgey, a junior tackle, are additional second-team performers on

offense. Martinez earned all-league honors last fall.

A whopping eight locals help comprise the second-team defense, including

Mesa senior inside linebacker Jason Rankin, who enjoys all-league

recognition for the second straight year.

Estancia outside linebacker Andy Romo and flex linebacker Fahad Jahid,

both juniors, are joined by teammate Josh Veach, a senior nose guard, on

the second-team defense.

Senior end Todd Duddridge and senior tackle Fernando Aronna represent

Mesa on the second team, while senior end Travis Hackett and junior

safety Eric Snell were chosen from CdM.
