MILLENNIUM MOMENT
Newport Beach builder Gen. William Lyon is known not only for leading one
of the nation’s biggest residential development firms, but also for his
contributions to local culture.
Lyon, the former co-owner of AirCal, was chief of the Air Force Reserve
from 1975 to 1979. As chairman of the board and chief executive officer
of The William Lyon Co., he was named Professional Builder magazine’s
“Builder of the Year” in 1983.
His philanthropic activities -- from the Boy Scouts of America to the
Irvine Barclay theater, the Volunteer Center and the Orange County
Performing Arts Center -- have been extensive. He was recognized in
August of this year by Center Stage, a support group for the center, for
his contributions to the arts.
* MILLENNIUM MOMENT celebrates the people who have made a major
contribution to the Newport-Mesa community during this century.
