Girls basketball: Sailors win in OT
COSTA MESA - Athena Vasquez scored four of her game-high 17 points
in overtime to lead Newport Harbor High’s girls basketball team to a
35-34 overtime win over Rubidoux in the consolation quarterfinals of the
Costa Mesa Tournament Tuesday afternoon.
Vasquez tied the game with 15 seconds remaining with a jumper to force
overtime.
From there, Newport Harbor (3-10) jumped out to a five-point lead and
held on for the win.
Rubidoux had a chance to tie the game in overtime, but a game-tying free
throw was disallowed due to a lane violation by the Falcons.
The Sailors advance to the consolation semifinals against Dominguez today
at noon.
