Looking back, 5 years ago this week...

Costa Mesa’s Sean Hylton scores the game-winning goal to lead the

Mustangs to a 12-11 victory over Marina and claim the CIF Southern

Section Division II boys water polo championship. Hylton’s goal comes

with 2:19 remaining and results in a 12-10 lead. Coach Brian Kreutzkamp

draws up the play as Robert Grayeli assists on the goal.

Estancia High’s Araceli Martinez runs a personal-best 19:43 to become

the first girl in school history to qualify for the CIF State

Championships.

Returning CIF doubles runners-up and two-time Sea View League

champions Meghan Wachtler and Alissa Scott help win to represent Corona

del Mar girls tennis in the round of 16 CIF individual tournament. CdM’s

Sea View League singles champ, Nina Vaughan, also advances. And Newport

Harbor’s Katie Canright and Vanessa Godbey move on as well.

Newport Harbor’s Autumn Puro finishes fifth and catapults the girls

cross country team to the state meet. Puro’s time of 22:00 is her first

scoring performance of the season and it helps knock Back Bay rival CdM

out of the state meet.

Three Newport Harbor girls and two CdM girls are selected to the

All-Sea View League girls volleyball first and second teams. Harbor’s

Jeannette Hecker is awarded Most Valuable Player as Jennifer Carey and

Laura Wilson also make the squad. CdM’s Kelly Campbell and Melissa Ford

also earn all-league honors.

CdM football coach Dick Freeman is honored as the Sea View League

Coach of the Year. Sea Kings’ two-way star Josh

Walz(quarterback/defensive back) is the league’s MVP. CdM running back

Tom O’Meara earns first-team all-league honors, thanks in part to

offensive lineman Nick Schaumburg, another first-teamer.

Later in the week, CdM buries Kennedy, 28-0, in the CIF Division V

quarterfinals. O’Meara runs for 212 yards and two touchdowns on 27

carries.

Looking back, 10 years ago this week...

The Corona del Mar High girls volleyball team comes from behind to

dispose of Poway, 15-12, 10-15, 13-15, 15-3, 15-6, in the Southern

California Regional volleyball semifinals. CdM, winners of 25 matches in

a row, wins with Tahlia Wagner’s 15 kills, Tracy Schriber’s 12 and Lara

Carlsen’s 11.

Newport Harbor’s football team loses to Freeway League champion Sunny

Hills, 27-7, in the CIF Division VI quarterfinals. Michael Stipe scores

the Sailors’ lone touchdown on a 2-yard run. Sailors running back

Russell Olshefski finishes wit 51 yards on 15 carries. Before he leaves

the game with a knee injury, he returns four kickoffs for 38, 32, 27 and

49 yards.

Costa Mesa’s Corey Delahunt scores eight goals for the Mustangs’ water

polo team, but South Pasadena wins the CIF 2-A championship game, 17-12.

It is South Pasadena’s second straight title as it uses three different

four-goal scorers. Mesa’s Russ Gliottone scores three goals and Tony

Fekete scores the other as the Mustangs finish their season 20-10.

The CdM girls tennis team falls just short in the CIF 4-A championship

match, as Palos Verdes wins on games, 77-67, after a 9-9 tie. Keri

Phebus, the nation’s top-ranked 18-year-old, sweeps, 6-4, 6-3, 6-0. In

doubles, CdM’s Courtney Strauss and Michelle McFarland sweep, 6-1, 6-3,

6-4.

Costa Mesa’s Quoc Pham is recognized as the Daily Pilot’s Pacific

Coast League Defensive Player of the Year. When Pham tackles opponents,

they are said to have been “Quocked.” Mustangs Coach Tom Baldwin is the

PCL Coach of the Year and Mesa players Ryan Park, David Phillips, Duby

Ospina and Pham are first-team defensive selections. Wide receiver

Jermaine Jackson and offensive lineman Basil Nassar earn first-team

honors on offense for the Mustangs.
