Gary Magner, one of the great high school football players to ever

come out of Costa Mesa, died Dec. 27. He was 55.

His death has been attributed to a heart problem, aggravated by hip

replacement surgery, and services in the northern California town of

Sonoma were held Dec. 30.

A Daily Pilot Hall of Famer out of Costa Mesa, he was a blue chip

player for Mater Dei High, Orange Coast College and USC. He spent two

seasons in the NFL in the late ‘60s.

The oldest son of Grace and Jim Magner, he leaves wife Nancy,

daughters Kelly and Kristi, grandchildren Andrew and Morgan, brothers

Richard and Michael and sister Pamela Fristed.
