Assistant Women’s Water Polo Coach Tom Hermstad will be leaving Golden

West College after 33 years of coaching. Hermstad was the original Golden

West water polo coach. He led the program from its inception in 1966 and

accepted the athlete director position in 1986. His career record was

424-105, and more than 40 of his players became All-Americans.

Hermstad plans to travel with his wife, Lynn, and spend time with his

children, Tommy and Carrie, he said.

Hamdorf retires after 24 years at Golden West

Golden West College men’s water polo coach Ken Hamdorf retired this

fall after 24 years of coaching at the college. Hamdorf said he is

looking forward to a smooth transition, confident that the water polo

program is in good hands.

Hamdorf plans to enjoy his hobbies, which include building boats and

woodworking, as well as traveling with his wife, Marilynn, to Colorado to

visit his grandchildren, he said.

Owens inducted into wrestling hall of fame

Fred Owens, former Golden West College vice president of

administrative services, was inducted into the California chapter of the

National Wrestling Hall of Fame. Owens, who retired in 1995 as a charter

faculty member, received the National Wrestling Hall of Fame’s Lifetime

Service to Wrestling Award for his 25 years of leadership as a wrestling

coach. In 1966, Owens became the first Golden West athletic director when

the college opened and also served as the dean of science, health and

physical education.

Rudmann appointed Coastline research supervisor

Jerry Rudmann was appointed supervisor of research for Coastline

Community College.

Rudmann has served as a research consultant for several community

colleges and has been involved in various statewide research projects for

the Statewide Community College Academic Senate. Rudmann’s duties at

Coastline will center on outcomes and accountability, including

effectiveness measures related to students and institutional success.

Ocean View High implements reading enrichment program

As part of its commitment to enrich and improve reading experiences

for all students, Ocean View High School has implemented the Sustained

Silent Reading Program.

For 21 minutes every school day, all students will stop their regular

activities and devote time to reading. Teachers, administrators,

classroom support staff and classified employees will also participate in

the reading program with the students. Students may bring books or

magazines from home, or reading materials are provided for them. The

program is designed to teach students to predict, clarify, question and

summarize their reading material.

Children’s theater presents ‘Big’

The Orange County Children’s Theater will present “Big: The Musical,”

playing at various times beginning Friday through Jan. 21 at Huntington

Beach High School, 1905 Main St. Tickets are $8 for adults, and $6 for

children 12 and younger, senior citizens and reserved groups of 10 or

more.
