New flood plain maps available at City Hall

Congressman Dana Rohrabacher (R-Huntington Beach) has announced that
as of Wednesday, the new flood plain maps for the southern part of
Fountain Valley releases all property owners from needing to have
mandatory flood insurance.
Rohrabacher acknowledged the involvement of the Fountain Valley City
Council, as well as the Orange County Board of Supervisors in his 12-year
advocacy of the Santa Ana River flood control project.
“I am pleased that property owners in the area south of Slater Avenue
and north of Garfield Avenue are no longer required to purchase mandatory
flood insurance,” Rohrabacher said, adding that the property owners would
also be entitled to a refund of the balance of their flood insurance
premiums.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency’s mandatory flood insurance
ranges from $200 to $800 a year depending on the amount of the loan or
mortgage.
Improvements to the Santa Ana River, which was a source of flooding to
many areas of North County, has helped Fountain Valley reclaim some areas
from flood zones. The improvements included adding concrete to the
river’s banks and last year’s completion of the $250-million,
550-foot-high Seven Oaks Dam in San Bernardino County.
The new maps will be available beginning today for inspection at
Fountain Valley City Hall, 10200 Slater Ave.
Those wanting an insurance refund need to submit a copy of the Federal
Emergency Management Agency Letter of Map Revision to their insurance
company. The Letter of Map Revision can also be obtained from City Hall.
