Are you interested in good food and good friendship, among a gathering

that could reach the high hundreds?

On July 29, the eighth annual Huntington Beach High Picnic will take

place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Lake Park.

This special summertime event is open to all who have ever attended

Huntington Beach High School, as well as their families and friends.

More than 900 attended last year’s festivities.

“It’s a wonderful day for all Huntington Beach High alumni,” said

Nadine Hanson, class of 1943. “I have been involved with this for the

past five years and it gets bigger every year.”

Hanson stated that the picnic began on a small scale. However, she

said that the July 29 get-together could attract close to 1,000 people.

“We encourage all alumni to come out and have a good time,” she added.

“It’s a great time to meet up with old friends and reminisce.”

This year, hamburgers and chips will be offered for sale and all in

attendance are encouraged to bring a salad or dessert, to share. Paper

plates and utensils will be provided by the Huntington Beach Alumni Assn.

Drinks will be available for a small donation.

Picnic tables are limited, so bring a lawn chair just in case.

Tutors sough for literacy program

The Oak View Family Literacy Program is holding a literacy tutor

training for new volunteers.

The program is part of Literacy Volunteers of America -- Huntington

Valley’s adult literacy program, and is seeking enthusiastic volunteers

interested in becoming tutors.A four-session tutor training workshop will

be held July 23, 25, 28 and 30, at Oak View Branch Library.

An orientation class will be held July 19 from 7 to 8 p.m.

The Oak View Family Literacy Program was formed in 1994, and Amy

Crepeau, the family literacy coordinator, has been with the program since

1997.

“We’re specifically trying to target families in the Oak View

neighborhood area, but we are open to anyone who is interested,” Crepeau

said. “We help parents learn to read and write English. We’re a

year-round program that holds training sessions maybe three times per

year.”

Those interested in becoming a volunteer tutor should contact Crepeau

at (714) 375-5104.
