Congratulations go out to The Heat, Huntington Beach girls softball
Under-10 Division team, for placing second at the Fountain Valley
All-Star Tournament last weekend.
The Heat defeated Irvine (9-2), Rancho Trabuco (13-1) and South
Huntington Beach (8-2), before defeating host Fountain Valley, 4-3, in
the semifinal round.
The team’s only loss was a 7-3 setback to Los Alamitos in the title
game.
Erica Congelliere was outstanding in the tournament as she belted a
three-run home run in each of The Heat’s first three games. She went 10
for 13 overall with 11 RBI and 13 runs scored. Other offensive leaders
included Jacqueline Kent with seven RBI, Kristen Mendez, Rebecca Sass and
Catherine Wakeman with five hits each and Hannah Thomas with a two-run
home run in the semifinal win over Fountain Valley.
Pitcher Catherine Wakeman struck out 23 batters in four games and
allowed just six earned runs in 23 innings, Mendez caught all five games
and threw out three base runners, and Sass, who played second base,
secured the semifinal win with consecutive unassisted outs to kill a last
inning rally by Fountain Valley . . .
Bryan Osuna and the California Dual Team put on a strong showing last
weekend at the National Cadet Freestyle Dual Meet Championships wrestling
competition held in Englewood, Colo.
The 14-year-old won all his matches, scoring five pins and two wins on
decision in Greco Roman wrestling, a style Osuna rarely wrestles.
The California team earned a silver medal in Greco Roman and a bronze
medal in Freestyle wrestling.
Later this month, Osuna will be in Fargo, N.D., to compete with the
California National team at the Cadet National Championships.
