PHOTO OF THE WEEK

As newspaper photographers, we are expected to bring back stand-alone

pictures that the industry calls “wild art.” These are the type of photos

you see in the paper that show a fun moment, like a kid running through

the sprinklers, or a pretty picture, like a beach sunset shot. These

pictures help fill out the paper, visually, when the news is slow or

other stories don’t have dominant images.

In the daily routine of things, there isn’t enough time to always

search for these type of pictures. When there is time, it’s kind of like

a treasure hunt. You never know what you are going to find.

The best pictures always come when you least expect them. This was one

of those unexpected situations. I was waiting for my next assignment at

the Newport Dunes when I saw the reflection in the water. So I waited for

someone to walk through the frame and -- snap -- I had a piece of “wild

art.”
