AYSO Region 120: Thunderhawks come out on top
The Thunderhawks, a Costa Mesa boys under-13 APP team, defeated
Corona del Mar’s APP team, 3-0, in an AYSO Region 120 soccer game
Saturday.
Forward William Briseno put the Thunderhawks on the scoreboard with a
goal in the first half. Rigo Miranda opened the second half with a goal
and Hayden Hiatt found the back of the net with a header in the final
minutes of the game.
The Mesa offense was spearheaded by midfielders Miranda, Starnes
Arnold, Matt Grella, Benny Edles and Luis Cozza.
Goalkeeper Thomas Kosnosky had a solid game to earn the shutout. He
received support on defense from Ben Abbott, Alberto Nava, Caleb Burgess,
Kenneth Zich and Adam Seagondollar.
In boys under-10 action:
* Wolverines 4, United 1 - Kevin Kiser scored in the first quarter for
the Wolverines with assists from Marc DeFrenza and Evan Edison. Ryan
Barnett snuck by the defense after receiving a center feed up the middle
from Marc Jones and David Nava to add a goal in the second quarter. In
the third quarter, Robert Rutan scored from 20 yards out with a strong
left-footed shot that slipped under the cross bar. Tyler Sutton along
with Eduardo Espinoza and Jose Espinoza controlled the offensive attacks
for the final goal in the fourth quarter. United Blue scored in the final
minutes to avoid being shut out.
* Quicksilver 3, Torpedoes 3 - Devin Guthrie scored early in the game
on Nov. 8 with assists from Kohl Jones and Andrew Roch. Quicksilver
trailed 3-1 in the fourth quarter, but Rigoberto Perez and Andrew Roth
had goals to tie the score.
* Quicksilver 2, Lightning Bolts 1 - Scott Wagner scored off a corner
kick by Jonathan Miranda to give Quicksilver a 1-0 lead on Saturday. Kohl
Jones added a goal to increase Quicksilver’s lead. In the fourth quarter,
Perez had a breakaway, but goalkeeper Roy Smith made a diving save for
the Lightning.
In girls under-12 action:
* Bad Hair Day 6, Tsunamis 0 - Paige Wallace and Taylor West each
scored two goals while Bridget Gleason and Cori Patelski each scored one.
Lauren Kipp and Amy Holt dominated the midfield. Regina Sianez and Cara
Holt anchored the defense for Bad Hair Day.
In girls under-10 action:
* Crushers 3, Blue Flames 2 - Teeny Cathey scored two goals in
regulation for the Crushers, but the Blue Flames answered with two goals
to send the game into overtime and then a shootout. Natalie Seckel and
Morgan Pautsch scored in the shootout and goalkeeper Carlie Rinehart made
four saves to give Bad Hair Day the victory. Solid defense in double
overtime was displayed by Nicole Marlborough, Vanessa Green, Shaylen
McNulty and Erin Rodman. Also contributing to the victory were Jessica
Naja, McKayla Sullivan and Rebecca MacLean.
