Anteaters win, 59-48

SAN FRANCISCO - UC Irvine’s women’s basketball team got off on the

right foot Saturday as the Anteaters recorded a 59-48 victory at the

University of San Francisco.

Cindy Oparah was the ringleader, scoring 15 points and picking up 11

rebounds, but she had help.

Wendy Gabbe scored 13 points and Brandy Hudson and Jana Ciperova each

scored 11.

It was knotted at 26 apiece at halftime, but the second half was

another matter as the Anteaters clicked from the field at the rate of

56.3%, while the host Dons, 0-1, went cold, netting 23.7%.

Another key issue was rebounds as UCI won the war, 45-31, to help

offset a 31-23 deficit in the turnovers department. Hudson had 12 boards

and Ciperova had eight.

The Anteaters, 1-0, make their home debut Monday night when they host

Nevada-Las Vegas with tipoff at 7 in the Bren Events Center.
