“It’s not a horse act, it’s not a circus, it’s a spiritual experience.

It’s mystical. It’s very, very special. There is nothing like it.”

-- Dean Corey, executive director of the Philharmonic Society, on

Theatre Zingaro’s national premiere of ‘Triptyk,’ which will open the

society’s fourth annual Eclectic Orange Festival in 2002. Theatre Zingaro

incorporates horses, horsemen, actors and dancers.

“The letter of intent is tied to the property next to the Times

building. We would have to revisit our thinking if the ground moves

underneath us.”

-- Paul Folino, president and chief executive of Emulex, on the

company signing a preliminary agreement to occupy a part of the Home

Ranch project in Costa Mesa if it goes forward. Proposed changes to the

project could change the company’s decision.

“They could have done the same thing with the same effect without the

flag. As soon as they saw the audience, they should have adjusted.”

-- Dana Perryman, principal of Westchester High School, on the

painting of a Confederate flag that Newport Harbor High School used

during a halftime Civil War-themed production during a Nov.9 football

game between the two schools. Westchester High is predominantly African

American.

“Unfortunately, there are symbols in our history that are painful, and

the Confederate flag is one of those. The school needs to be as sensitive

as it can regarding that issue.”

-- Michael Vossen, principal of Newport Harbor High, acknowledging

that the using the image of a Confederate flag was inappropriate. Newport

Harbor is in the process of drafting a letter of apology to Perryman.

“Until six months or so ago, I focused just on El Toro. But after

talking to people down there . . . now I’m saying that El Toro is one of

several possible solutions.”

-- Richard Riordan, gubernatorial candidate and former Los Angeles

mayor, explaining that his shift to a regional solution for future air

traffic does not mean he’s turning his back on locals.

“We have so many signs that are not coordinated in size, design, etc.

If we were more user-friendly with our visitors, it would help us.”

-- Sharon Wood, assistant city manager for Newport Beach, on why the

city is looking into its official signage. The City Council voted to

bring back a revised agenda item at a future meeting.

“It’s disappointing that 1,000 or so people in Newport Coast don’t see

the many benefits of becoming part of Newport Beach.”

-- Homer Bludau, Newport Beach city manager, on the brakes being put

on the city’s annexation of Newport Coast at the last minute Friday by

presenting signed petitions. If county officials verify that the

signatures include at least 853 registered voters, the annexation will go

up for a vote of Newport Coast residents.

“We love Newport Beach. But the community needs to be involved with

the process.”

-- Arlene Greer, Newport Coast resident, on why she and her husband

presented the petitions with 969 signatures to the City Council on

Friday.
