Community college football: OCC puts 10 on All-Conference teams
Orange Coast College’s Brandon Hall and Vince Strang headline a
cast of 10 Pirates who earned All-Mission Conference Central Division
laurels.
Hall, a 6-foot-4, 230-pound sophomore tight end, was OCC’s lone
unanimous selection for the first team offense. Hall, who was also an
honorable mention on J.C. Grid-Wire’s season-ending teams, finished with
295 yards and two touchdowns off 26 receptions.
Strang, a 5-8, 155-pound sophomore, was the only player to earn a spot
on two teams as he wound up on the second team as a wide receiver and on
the defense’s first team for his specialty as a punt returner. Strang led
the Pirates with 30 receptions, good for 602 yards and three touchdowns.
OCC freshman tailback Niles Mittasch, who started six games for the
Pirates, earned second-team honors, as did freshmen offensive linemen
Patrick Afif and Ed Fane and freshman punter Nick Ross.
Mittasch, from Oregon’s Churchill High, led the Pirates with 774 yards
and four touchdowns on 153 carries, averaging 5.1 yards per carry.
Four Pirates were awarded with second team defense status. Sophomore
defensive end Greg Smith and freshman defensive tackle Kyle Westman, a
Costa Mesa High product, represented OCC in the trenches, while standout
freshman linebacker and tackle machine Dan Steinau joined them.
Sophomore cornerback Tim Ogo, a leader in the Pirates’ secondary, also
made the second team.
OCC, the 2000 Mission Conference Central Division co-champions,
finished the season 3-7, 1-4 in the Central Division.
Sophomore defensive end Justin Shea, a Corona del Mar High product, of
Saddleback earned first team defense status.
