Newport Beach’s Marianne Towersey, the area’s all-time leader in
club championships with 18 women’s titles at Santa Ana Country Club, won
the California Senior Women’s Amateur Championship at Bayonet Golf Course
in Monterey.
In the final round Wednesday, Towersey broke away from Judy Miller of
Salinas on the back nine and finished at 9-over-par 83 (75-81-83--239),
four strokes ahead Miller.
Towersey, who has won 18 of the last 21 women’s club championships at
Santa Ana Country Club, became the all-time leader in the Newport-Mesa
community for club titles (men or women) this year.
Last year, in her first year in the seniors division (50 and over),
Towersey was the medalist at the U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur
Championship.
A three-time Tea Cup Classic champion (1998-2000), Towersey will
represent her club again this year in Tea Cup Classic VI on her home
course this summer (TBA).
