VFW win streak hits 10
VFW capped a near-perfect season this week by winning its 10th
consecutive game.
With the Majors Division regular season championship already in hand,
VFW readied itself for the upcoming District 55 Tournament of Champions
by defeating Rotary, 10-1.
VFW led 4-0 after one inning and never looked back.
Keegan Valaika opened the scoring by singling and scoring on an
infield overthrow. Devin Hands then pushed the lead to 3-0 with a two-run
double and Colby Ammerman singled home Hands to complete the inning’s
scoring.
Hands, Valaika and Matt Austin each finished with two hits.
Kevin Buck, Drake Dixon and Will Armstrong each singled.
Cooper Gwaltney and Alex Shusko both knocked in runs. Gabe Stansbury
walked twice and scored two runs.
Buck threw three scoreless innings, striking out five and surrendering
only two hits.
Stansbury finished on the mound and allowed Rotary one single. He
struck out four.
Roy Herbert drove in Rotary’s lone run with a two-out single. Nick
Witte, Austin Hyden, Chris Smith and Lorenzo Torreiro all singled.
VFW finished the regular season with a 15-1 record. Team pitching and
defense allowed the opposition just 33 runs in 16 games.
VFW’s offense, meanwhile scored 118 runs during the regular season, an
average of just over seven runs per game.
The District 55 Tournament of Champions is set to start on June 8.
