Blue Devils unbeaten in first half of play

The Blue Devils swept through the Junior Basketball League’s first

round of regular season play unbeaten as they claimed two more victories

during the past week at Laguna Beach High.

Their victims included the Trailblazers, who fell, 60-47, and the

Bruins, whom they had to rally past, 61-53.

The Blue Devil’s big three of Spencer Harrell (49 points), Bobby

Monroe (29 points) and Brandon Finnerty (27 points) accounted for 105 of

the team’s 121 points scored during the two games.

The two wins gives the Blue Devils a 5-0 record through the first half

of league play. They are 6-0 overall.

Brian Delino scored 21 points and Brandon Reed scored 14 to lead the

Trailblazers, who fell to 0-5 and 1-5.

Sam Palfreyman’s 15 points and 13 more by Christopher Hyden paced the

Bruins (2-3, 2-4), who led the Blue Devils at the half, 35-27, before

being outscored, 22-8, in the next two periods.

Clippers 73, Bruins 63

Clippers 65, Lakers 60

The two victories keeps the Clippers (4-1, 5-1) one game behind the

Blue Devils in the standings.

High scoring Clipper point guard Cheyne Martin, who tops the league

with a 34 points scoring average, continued his torrid streak by netting

30 points against the Bruins and 36 against the Lakers.

Nathan Peckett added 14 points for the Clippers in their win over the

Bruins, and Armand Begay had 16 points in the win over the Lakers.

Garrett Preston led the Bruins in scoring with 26 points, Sam

Palfreyman had 12 and Patrick Curran scored 10.

The Lakers were led by Matthew Renault’s 26 points, 15 by Travis

Grogan and 13 by Tyler Naylor.

Lakers 67, Rainbows 53

Matthew Renault, the league’s third leading scorer with a 24.8 scoring

average, scored 23 points, Travis Grogan scored 21 and Tyler Naylor

chipped in with 13 to lead the Lakers.

Jeff Clark, the league’s No. 2 scorer with a 26 points average, netted

24 and was followed by Ian Butters’ 19 points.

Bruins 74, Lakers 58

Nine players got into the scoring act for the Bruins. Garrett Preston,

the team’s leading scorer with a 21 points per game average, led the

Bruins charge with 17 points. Other double-digit scorers included Sam

Palfreyman with 14 points and Patrick Curran with 11.

The Lakers also had three players score in double figures, led by

Tyler Naylor who hit his season average of 18 points.

Travis Grogan finished with 16 points and Matthew Renault netted 10.

Clippers 55, Trailblazers 44

Nathan Picket led the Clippers with 23 points, Jonathan Begay scored

14 points and Daniel Holman finished with 11.

Trailblazers’ leading scorer, Brian Delino, had 22 points, which

included three, three-point baskets and hitting five of six free throws.

Blue Devils 72, Rainbows 56

Bobby Monroe scored 30 points and Spence Harrell scored 23 points and

hit five of six free throw attempts to pace the Blue Devils.

Jeff Clark nailed three, three-point baskets and led the Rainbows with

29 points. Ian Butters and Nat Weaver hit double figures with 11 and 10

points, respectively.
