A.G. Edwards’ late rally falls short
A.G. Edwards’ great season came to an end Tuesday night, but not
before the team put on one last, exciting show.
Trailing 11-2 against the San Juan Capistrano Yankees in District 55
Tournament of Champions Juniors Division action at Chapparosa Park in
Laguna Niguel, A.G. Edwards staged a furious rally, only to fall, 11-9,
in the single elimination tournament.
A.G. Edwards showed great determination in climbing back from the
seven run deficit.
They made the Yankees, one of the district’s top hitting teams, sweat
out a frantic finish which saw A.G. Edwards push across five runs in the
final inning.
A.G. Edwards had a runner stationed at third base and the tying run at
the plate, before San Juan Capistrano recorded the final out.
The team opened the Tournament of Champions with a 12-0 rout of the Tijeras Creek Wombats behind the shutout pitching of Kevin Kelly and an
explosive offense.
Jody Stevens starred on the mound in A.G. Edwards’ second tournament
game, a 7-6 nail-bitter over the Rancho Niguel Cardinals.
The play of left fielder Alex Mars, third baseman Thomas Cannon and
Jonathan Begay, Garrett Rauch, Bobby Monroe and Kevin Kelly keyed the two
victories.
Max Hilburn, Max Caputo, Dylan Haifley, Riley Thornton, Tyler Palmer
and Stevens provided the offensive fireworks that produced 19 runs in the
two games.
