Man stabbed after robbery

A 34-year-old Costa Mesa man suffered a cut to his abdomen after

an armed robber reportedly took his money and brandished a knife

early Tuesday morning, officials said.

The victim had parked his vehicle and was walking toward his home

in the 1900 block of Wallace Avenue at about 5:15 a.m. when the alleged robber approached him and demanded money from him at

knifepoint, Costa Mesa Police Lt. Dale Birney said.

“The victim then gave the man his wallet,” he said. “He took the

money out, threw the wallet down, slashed the victim on his abdomen

and fled.”

The victim was treated at Hoag Hospital and released, Birney said.

He said a description of the alleged robber is not available.

The incident is being treated as an armed robbery case, but it is

likely that an assault with a deadly weapon charge will be added on

later, Birney said.

The incident was not gang-related or connected with the stabbing

of a 15-year-old boy near 19th Street and Wallace Avenue on April 15,

he said.
