Breakers get no breaks
It was a tough week of athletic competition for Laguna Beach High
teams, many of whom resumed action this week following a spring break
layoff.
Despite the vacation, the Laguna boys’ volleyball team saw plenty
of action, playing six, best-of-five game matches over a four-day
period.
The swing began with a 15-11, 15-2, 11-15, 11-15 Pacific Coast League loss to visiting University.
The Breakers appeared to have the match in hand after winning the
first two games, but the Trojans rallied to win on Laguna’s home
floor for just the second time in history.
Matt Anderson led the Breakers in kills with 25 and Trey Chapel
had 15. Anderson also had five blocks, Chapel had 13 digs, Luke
Morris had 12 digs and Nick Aronoff had 42 assists and 16 digs.
A day later, Laguna took to the road to play rival Corona del Mar
and the Sea Kings swept the Breakers, 15-13, 15-5, 15-11.
The two losses dropped Laguna into third-place in the league
standings.
The team next headed north to compete at the prestigious Santa
Barbara Tournament of Champions.
The Breakers entered the tournament with a No. 11 seed but
finished 15th overall after posting a 1-3 record.
Laguna dropped consecutive matches to Newport Harbor, Carlsbad and
Dos Pueblos -- a match in which outside hitter Matt Anderson was
injured -- before the Breakers swept Righetti, 15-13, 15-7, 15-7.
Laguna is ranked eighth in this week’s CIF Southern Section
Division II poll. Corona del Mar was second in the poll behind No. 1
Valencia and University came in at No. 10.
In softball, Hilary Frimond belted her fifth and sixth home runs
of the season and Laguna was an 8-2 winner over visiting University
on Tuesday.
Frimond delivered her first shot of the game with the bases empty
in the second inning and hit a two-run homer in the third.
Joceyln Turner went the distance and improved her record to 8-6 as
Laguna won for the first time in five league outings.
In boys tennis, Laguna suffered an 18-0 rout Monday at Corona del
Mar. On Tuesday, the Breakers were defeated by host Northwood, 16-2.
The two losses put Laguna at 2-4 in league play.
In baseball action, Laguna dropped PCL home games to Corona del
Mar, 15-1, and Northwood, 6-4.
Laguna is now 3-7 in league.
