Anteaters lose third straight

The UC Irvine baseball team lost its fifth-straight opener of a Big

West Conference three-game series after dropping a 4-1 decision

Friday night to visiting Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

UCI sophomore pitcher Brett Smith went seven innings, scattering

four hits and allowing four runs, all in the fifth to take the loss.

Mark Wagner, the Anteaters’ freshman catcher, went 2 for 4 with one

RBI. UCI fell to 17-29, 5-8 in the Big West, while Cal Poly improved

to 23-21, 5-8.

OCC falls in finale

* COMMUNITY COLLEGE: Gary Alexander hit a one-out, solo home run

in the top of the 10th inning, his second solo shot of the game, to

lead visiting Fullerton (17-25-1, 9-15) to an 8-6 win over host

Orange Coast Friday in the season finale for both teams.

Alexander delivered the knockout blow and sent the Pirates

(19-21-1, 8-16) to defeat in the final game of the Orange Empire

Conference Mini Tournament. He also homered in the fifth inning. Both

home run cleared the left-field fence, the first tying the game, 2-2.

Mesa miscues costly

* HIGH SCHOOL: The Costa Mesa High baseball team committed six

errors, allowing visiting Orange to post a 4-2 Golden West League

victory Friday without the benefit of an earned run.

Steve Doerr doubled and scored on an error in the third for Mesa’s

first run, then belted a leadoff homer, his first of the year, in the

seventh. He was 2 for 3 to lead the hosts’ seven-hit attack.

Nate Hunter singled with two outs in the seventh to bring the

tying run to the plate, but Orange pitcher Alex Morones struck out

the next hitter to preserve his complete-game victory.

Eagles’ Scheafer shines

* HIGH SCHOOL: Visiting Santa Ana erupted for eight runs in the

second inning, built an 11-0 lead and coasted for a 14-6 Golden West League baseball victory over Estancia Friday.

Eric Scheafer went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and Brad Young was also 2

for 3 with one RBI for the Eagles (3-17, 1-7 in league).

Tyler Hoffman drove in an Estancia run with a triple, while Matt

Ronquillo and Jeremy Hauser also had one RBI apiece for the hosts.
