Sailors join Woodbridge atop Sea View

* VOLLEYBALL: The Newport Harbor High boys volleyball team avenged

its April 10 loss to Woodbridge with a 15-13, 14-16, 15-9, 15-4 Sea

View League win Tuesday on the Sailors’ floor.

The victory moved the two teams into a tie for first place with

one league match remaining. Woodbridge swept the first-round meeting,

15-10, 15-5, 15-5.

Jamie Diefenbach had 13 kills and four blocks and Nick Glassic

added 11 kills for the Sailors (17-11, 8-1 in league). Mike Toole

(nine kills and four aces), Paul Toman (eight kills) and Mike

McDonald (five kills) also chipped in.

Morgan Govaars, Nick Kelly and Adam Schlesinger combined for seven

service aces. Schlesinger also posted 55 assists.

The Sailors will close out league play Thursday at 5:45 p.m. when

they host Foothill. A victory will give them at least a share of the

league title.

Lightning seizes second

* BASEBALL: The Sage Hill School baseball team moved past host

Capistrano Valley Christian into sole possession of second place in

the Academy League Tuesday, defeating the Eagles, 13-9.

The Lightning (13-5, 9-3 in league) trails only Oxford Academy in

the league standings with three league games remaining. Oxford

entered Tuesday’s clash with last-place Whitney with an 8-1 league

mark.

Oxford was the last league team to defeat Sage Hill, which has now

defeated eight straight Academy League foes.

Zach Friedrichs and Matt Loper each had two hits in an eight-run

second inning for Sage. Friedrichs was 3 for 4 with three RBIs and

Loper was 2 for 4 with an RBI. Loper also earned the victory in

relief, improving to 6-1 this spring.

Tim Wilkins had one hit and drove in four runs for the winners,

who host CVC Thursday, before finishing the regular season with two

games next week against Oxford.

Tars’ Khoury moves on

* TENNIS: Newport Harbor High freshman Robert Khoury and the

Sailors’ doubles team of Charlie Farmer and Tyler Deck each advanced

to today’s semifinals of the Sea View League boys tennis

championships at Laguna Hills High.

Khoury, the No. 2 seed, defeated a Laguna Hills opponent, 6-0,

6-0, then earned a 6-0, 6-1 quarterfinal win over a Woodbridge foe.

Khoury faces Foothill’s Jay Himber at 12:30 p.m. today.

Farmer and Deck, the No. 4-seeded doubles team, lost only three

games in two matches Tuesday and face the top-seeded duo of Kyle

Roybal and Morgan Serfas from Foothill in today’s semifinals at 12:30

p.m.

In singles, Jonathan Tweena won his first match, 6-0, 6-2, but

fell to top-seeded Shimpei Suzuki from Woodbridge, 6-0, 6-2, in the

quarterfinals. Brian Hochwald lost to Himber, 6-2, 6-2, in the first

round Tuesday.

Brandon Lutfy and Dylan Espley-Jones fell to a Woodbridge team,

6-3, 6-2, while Ruslan Seryduk and Jason Lund also lost to a

Warriors’ duo, 6-1, 6-0.

Lighning duo advances

* TENNIS: The Sage Hill School doubles team of senior Eric Burton

and

sophomore Tristan Cordier advanced to the semifinals by winning

two matches Tuesday at the Academy League individual boys tennis

tournament at Whitney High.

Burton and Cordier defeated a doubles team from Oxford in the

first round, 6-0, 6-0. Then, they scored a 6-1, 6-3 victory over a

doubles team from Fairmont Prep in a quarterfinal. Burton and Cordier

will face the top-seeded duo from Whitney today at 1 p.m.

Ian Livingston, Todd Montekab and Greg Solodko each lost their

first-round singles matches Tuesday.

CdM clincher on hold

* BASEBALL: Northwood High scored five runs in the bottom of the

fifth inning to break open a tie game and defeat visiting Corona del

Mar, 8-3, in Pacific Coast League baseball action Tuesday.

The loss ended an eight-game PCL winning streak for the Sea Kings.

CdM took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but the

Timberwolves added two of their own in the second. CdM took the lead

back with two runs in the third, but Northwood tied the score with a

run in the bottom of the inning.

Keith Long and Josh Bradbury each went 2 for 4 for the Sea Kings.

Nick Karpe was 1 for 2 with two RBIs.

The Sea Kings (14-9, 9-3) can clinch at least a share of the

league title, as well as the league’s No. 1 berth in the CIF Southern

Section playoffs with a victory over Northwood (7-5 in league) Friday

at 3:15 p.m. at Corona del Mar.

Dozen Mesa finalists

* SWIMMING: Kyle Thorsness qualified first in the 100-yard

backstroke (1:01.91) and third in the 100 freestyle (53.67) to lead

12 Costa Mesa High boys swimmers to advance to the championship

finals at the Golden West League preliminaries Tuesday at Orange

High.

For the Estancia boys team, Frank Gamboa qualified first in the

200 and 500 freestyle races.

Gamboa clocked a 1:58.61 in the 200 free, six seconds better than

his previous best, while racing to first in the 500 free in 5:21.74,

a CIF consideration time, Estancia Coach John Carpenter said.

Chad Kunert qualified second in the 500 free in 5:24.16, shaving

four seconds off his personal best, while getting fourth in the 200

free (2:01.78), three seconds faster than his prior best.

Evan Spencer qualified second in the 100 butterfly (57.95) and

third in the 200 free (2:00.45), while Anthony Adamowicz qualified

sixth in the 200 free (2:03.65) and third in the 500 free (5:33.63),

Adam Douglas, third in the 50 free (23.75) and second in the 100 free

(53.27), and Brian Tipton, second 100 breaststroke (1:09.47) and

fifth in the 200 individual medley (2:27.42), also qualified in two

events.

Katie Thorsness qualified first in the 200 free (2:17.16) and the

500 free (6:03.15) to lead the Costa Mesa girls team, which had eight

other girls who also qualified in two events each.

Patricia Schuppert, second in the 500 free (6:03.15) and third in 100 fly (1:10.14), Jessica Steenhard, fourth in 100 fly (1:13.29) and

fourth in 200 IM (2:43.49).

Mesa boys Matt Jaroslawksi (seventh in the 200 IM in 2:30.01),

Sergio Hernandez (seventh in the 50 free in 25.76), Tyler Choi (fifth

in the 100 fly in 1:06.29), Chris Medina (seventh in the 500 free in

5:55.10), Jarrad Clever (fifth in the 100 back in 1:09.60), Luke

Yellin (sixth in the 100 back in 1:09.67) and Mark Geil (third in the

100 breaststroke in 1:11.17) also qualified for the Golden West

League finals Thursday at 1 p.m. at Orange.

Estancia’s Paul Collier qualified fifth in the 200 free (2:03.32),

while posting a 57.13, good for seventh in the 100 free.

Anthony Hermann qualified fifth in the 100 breaststroke in

1:12.77, a personal best by more than four seconds, while Nathan

Marsteller qualified seventh (1:13.84) in the same event.

Sean Goodman qualified eighth in the 100 butterfly (1:10.63).

Katie Thorsness qualified first in the 200 free (2:17.16) and the

500 free (6:03.15) to lead the Costa Mesa girls swim team, which had

eight other girls who also qualified in two events each.

Patricia Schuppert, second in the 500 free (6:03.15) and third in 100 fly (1:10.14), Jessica Steenhard, fourth in 100 fly (1:13.29) and

fourth in 200 IM (2:43.49).

Jessica Bunnell qualified fifth in the 50 free (28.92) and third

in the 100 free (1:03.03), while Sarah Bowman qualified seventh in

the 50 free (29.19) and fourth in the 100 free (1:03.19).

Christine Twohig, fifth in the 100 free (1:04.53) and second in

the 200 free (2:17.57), Annie Le, seventh in the 200 free (2:26.09)

and seventh in the 500 free (6:52.71), Allyson Harris, second in the

100 back (1:11.36) and second in the 200 IM (2:39.86) and Allison

Gravis, fourth in the 100 breaststroke (1:20.43) and third in the 200

IM (2:42.52), also qualified. Quyen Nguyen also qualified fifth in

the 100 breaststroke (1:22.29).

Estancia’s Marilyn Reich qualified first in the 100 breaststroke (1:15.85) and 200 IM (2:35.63), while Carolina Barnes also qualified

fourth in the 100 back (1:12.29).

Mesa falls in five

* VOLLEYBALL: The Costa Mesa High boys volleyball team dropped a

seesaw Golden West League clash at Santa Ana Tuesday, 15-1, 15-7,

14-16, 15-17, 17-15.

Senior Danny Krikorian had a team-high 18 kills for Mesa (2-15.

1-10 in league).

Sowers just misses

* GOLF: Brandon Sowers’ 5-over-par 77 led a quartet of Newport

Harbor High boys golfers on the second and final day of the Sea View

League finals at Oak Valley Golf Club in Beaumont. Sowers, however,

missed qualifying for the CIF individual sectional championships by

six strokes.

Davis Pemstein shot 79 followed by an 87 from Garrett Whitfield

and an 89 by Michael Benvenuti on the par-72 course.

Lightning swept

* VOLLEYBALL: Sage Hill School didn’t have enough to get past

visiting Brethren Christian and fell, 15-5, 15-10, 15-1, in an

Academy League boys volleyball match Tuesday night.

Kevin Joyce and Macsun Frederick each had six kills in the loss

for the Lightning, which fell to 8-7, 6-7 in league.

UCI trounced by ASU

* BASEBALL: UC Irvine’s Jeff Werhun singled in center fielder Jon

Horwitz in the seventh inning for the team’s only run in an 11-1

nonconference loss to host Arizona State Tuesday night.

Right fielder Gary Dudley went 2 for 3 for the Anteaters (18-29),

who managed six hits against ASU pitcher Ben Thurmond, who improved

to 6-0 on the season.

Kris Krise fell to 3-2 for UC Irvine.
