Rios, Red Sox edge Angels
Alex Rios’ triple in the bottom of the sixth inning proved the
difference in an 8-6 victory for the Red Sox over the Angels in
Newport Harbor Baseball Association Bronco Division (11-12-year-old)
play.
The game saw three lead changes and two ties, with the Red Sox
pushing across three runs in their half of the sixth inning.
The Red Sox led, 4-2, after three innings, but the Angels came
back with three in the fifth to take a 5-4 lead. Christian Anderson
led off with a double and Blake Davey later knocked him in with an
RBI single. Ned Lyon also had an RBI in the inning on a fielder’s
choice.
The Red Sox got on the board in the first inning on a single by
Daniel Norris, who later scored on an RBI single by Josh Bowman.
Danny Moskovits hit a sacrifice fly and Rios walked in the inning.
The Red Sox broke a tie with two runs in the bottom of the third
inning as Moskovits drove in Arturo Vasquez with a single.
Garrett Morgan knocked in two runs with an RBI double in the sixth
inning, but Trevor Noon fielded a sharply-hit ball to end the game.
Moskovits also starred on the mound, striking out eight in three
innings.
Andrew Taylor contributed two walks and a run scored.
Vasquez, Moskovits and Rios each scored twice for the Red Sox
while Anderson and Lyon crossed the plate twice for the Angels.
In Mustang (9-10-year-old) play:
* Indians 10, Angels 7
The Indians came back from a 5-0 deficit with 10 runs in the
fourth and fifth innings to win.
Logan Friend had two singles, four RBIs and two runs scored for
the Indians while Tyler Porteous tallied a single and the
game-winning RBI.
Jack Kanen added two singles, two RBIs and two runs scored along
with Teddy Steffel’s two singles, a double, two RBIs and two runs.
Zach Porteous pitched and scored two runs along with Cole Blower.
Tyler Yanasa scored three runs while Joel Dicesare-Tenore singled
and doubled for the Angels. Luke Dawson had an RBI single and showed
solid defense.
In Pinto (7-8-year-old) play:
* The Red Sox and Mariners played at Newport Heights Monday.
Quinci Holgate, Austin Smith and Duke Morales all continued their
hot hitting while Bryan Shollin made some strong plays in the field.
Robert Alexander, Estevan Muniz and Spencer Buchanan all added
solid play.
In Shetland National (6-year-old) action:
* Cory Kennedy’s hit with the bases loaded drove in Harrison
Vandervort to spark the Phillies in the first game of coaches
pitching to batters.
Joey Faris made some catches in the outfield and Matt Valeriano
caught Liam Ogburn’s throw from third base to record the first out.
Griffin Sharp played strong in center field.
In Pony play:
* Newport River Dogs 12, Corona del Mar Athletics 5
The River Dogs produced 16 hits, four of them by Nathan Todd, who
clubbed his fourth home run of the season en route to knocking in
four RBIs. Todd went 4 for 4 with two singles and a double and got
the save for Spencer Smith.
Todd struck out four in 1 1/3 innings in relief of Smith, who
pitched three innings, allowing three runs on six hits with seven
strikeouts to get his third win.
Smith finished 3 for 4 with a double and two RBIs.
Dan Winkle went 3 for 4 with an RBI while Peter Hapke, Jackson
Massingill and Michael Thagrand all tallied one RBI.
Brett Adams and Glen Christiansen each singled for the River Dogs.
Massingill threw out his sixth runner of the year trying to steal.
