Khoury reaches final
Newport Harbor High freshman Robert Khoury, the No. 2 seed in the Sea
View League boys tennis individual championships, defeated Foothill’s
Jay Himber, 6-0, 6-4, in the singles semifinals Wednesday at Laguna
Hills.
Khoury is facing Woodbridge’s Shimpei Suzuki, the top seed, in the
finals. The match began Wednesday but was postponed until today
because of rain. They’re tied in the first set, 1-1.
In doubles, Foothill’s Kyle Roybal and Morgan Serfas defeated
Newport Harbor’s Charlie Farmer and Tyler Deck, 6-3, 6-3. Farmer and
Deck are both juniors
Braunsdorf ousted
* Estancia High freshman Scott Braunsdorf came up just short in
the Golden West League boys tennis singles finals Wednesday, losing
to top-seeded Jason Nguyen of Westminster, 6-1, 6-2.
Braunsdorf, the No. 2 seed, lost the first set in his semifinal
match Tuesday, 0-6, but rebounded to post two consecutive 7-5
victories against Ocean View’s Thomas Nguyen.
The Eagles’ doubles team of Louis Valdes and Chris Cacho took
fourth place in league after falling to a Saddleback duo, 7-6, 4-6,
2-6, Wednesday. Cacho and Valdes were seeded third while the
Saddleback team was the No. 4 seed.
Lightning duo takes 3rd
* The No 1. doubles team from Sage Hill School, Eric Burton and
Tristian Cordier, took home third place in the Academy League boys
tennis finals Wednesday and was named to the league’s first team.
Burton and Cordier lost, 6-1, 6-2, in the semifinals to Jason Lee
and Howard Lai, the top-seeded team and eventual champion from host
Whitney.
In the third-place match, Burton and Cordier battled out a tough
three sets, rallying from a 4-6 loss in the first to take the final
two, 7-5, 7-6 over Whitney’s second-seeded team of James Lhi and
Parag Parekh.
Burton and Cordier will be first alternates for the CIF Southern
Section individual sectionals that begin May 22.
In the Southern Section Division V final rankings, three teams
from the Academy League were ranked in the top five. Sage Hill was
No. 5, with Whitney at No. 1 and Fairmont Prep at No. 3.
