Chargers, Vikings split in key Sunset baseball series
In a key showdown series last week between Edison High and Marina,
two teams battling to become the front-runner in the Sunset League
baseball race, it was the Chargers who were able to maintain a
one-game lead over the Vikings.
Edison rode the pitching of David Huff and used a 10-hit attack to edge the visiting Vikings, 2-1.
The victory puts the Chargers at 9-2 in league play heading into
this week’s two-game series with Huntington Beach.
“It was a great win -- but this thing is not over,” said Edison
coach Matt Mosiello. “We’ve got four more big games to play.”
Edison ends Sunset play with two games against Los Alamitos on May
13 and May 15.
Marina, meanwhile, slipped to 8-3. The Vikings this week face
another crucial, two-game series when they take on Los Alamitos.
In the first of two meetings between the schools two days earlier,
Marina rode the pitching of Wes Etheridge and the hitting of Daric
Barton to a 7-3 over visiting Edison.
Etheridge threw a five-hitter and Barton hit a three-run home run
as the Vikings snapped Edison’s 10-game win streak and moved into a
tie for the league lead along with the Chargers and Los Alamitos.
Justin Sellers, Brooks Walling, Russ Fulerson and Jacob Luque each
had RBI singles for Marina.
Chad Blauer hit a two-run homer for Edison.
In Golden West League baseball, Ocean View suffered its first
league loss at Westminster, 5-2.
The loss left the two schools tied for the league lead with 8-2
records.
Joe Lococo and Casey Wurts each had RBI singles in the sixth
inning.
In earlier play, Ocean View was a 5-2 winner over visiting Orange.
Wurts hit a two-run home run and Joe Jameson had a solo home run
for the Seahawks. The pitching win went to starter Joe Roth who
improved to 3-0.
In boys’ volleyball, Huntington Beach moved into a tie for the
Sunset League lead by handing Esperanza its first league loss, 15-11,
8-15, 15-12, 15-12 on the Oilers’ home floor.
The Oilers and Aztecs share the league lead at 7-1 as the Sunset
race entered its final week.
Huntington’s one-two punch of Kenny Markwardt and Eric Eastman
combined for 38 kills, Markwardt leading the way with an even 20.
Two days earlier, the Oilers swept Marina, 15-11, 15-4, 15-8.
Edison rode Brett Reid’s 34 kills to down Marina in a match that
went to the wire, 14-16, 10-15, 15-12, 15-12, 15-7.
Steve Klosterman turned in 61 kills for Marina.
Ocean View continued its stronghold on first-place in the Golden
West League following a 15-4, 15-13, 15-6 sweep of Santa Ana.
