Errors costly for Newport Harbor
Foothill High’s baseball team took advantage of eight Newport Harbor
errors to post a 9-1 Sea View League victory Tuesday at Newport
Harbor.
The Knights (22-3, 14-0 in league) had only one batter record more
than two hits, but starter Bryan Olund did his part, striking out
seven in five innings to improve to 5-1-1.
Newport (8-17, 3-11) managed three hits, a double by Joe
Cantarella to go with singles by starting pitcher Ryan Heenan and
Ryan Rowe. Cantarella scored Newport Harbor’s run in the seventh
inning, stealing home after Foothill’s catcher attempted to call
timeout, but umpires did not grant the request.
“The catcher ran out and talked to the pitcher so, I sent
[Cantarella] home,” said Newport Harbor Coach Joel Desguin. “You
can’t grant timeout until the guy steps on the base.”
Heenan was on his way to first after a walk when Cantarella broke
for home.
Mike McLean walked and Andre Pinesett sacrificed Cantarella to
third earlier in the inning.
Heenan and Rowe, both seniors, teamed up on the mound for the
Sailors. Rowe struck out two in four innings of relief.
Newport Harbor will travel to Foothill, league champions and
ranked third in CIF Southern Section Division II, on Thursday for a
3:15 p.m. start.
