Cinnamon spice for Kaiser team
Melanie Neff
Cinnamon Sary scored a goal and dished out an assist to lead Kaiser
No. 2’s third- and fourth-grade girls soccer team to a 2-0 victory
over Newport Elementary No. 2 in Pool H of the Daily Pilot Cup on
Thursday at the Costa Mesa Farm Complex.
Kaiser’s offense led by third-grade forward/midfielder Carly
Sorensen, dominated throughout the match, keeping the ball on
Newport’s side of the field. Sorensen continually peppered Newport’s
defense with shots and passes, but it wasn’t until the second half
that Kaiser’s pressure paid off.
Midway through the second half, Sary sent a through ball to
Jessica Hemsley at the corner. Hemsley placed a perfect shot into the
opposite corner, leaving fourth-grade goalkeeper Kira RajBhandary
without any chance at a save. RajBhandary finished the game with
seven saves, keeping the score close despite Kaiser’s offensive
power.
Sary, who just missed a free-kick opportunity wide, made up for it
minutes later. She put the game away when she took on RajBhandary in
a one-on-one. After weaving through two defenders, Sary dumped the
ball into the corner out of the RajBhandary’s reach, giving Kaiser a
2-0 lead.
Sadie Evans and Shannon Wagner combined for two saves for Kaiser,
which won the fifth- and sixth-grade title last year.
Kaiser will play Our Lady Queen of Angels at 5:45 p.m. today at
the Costa Mesa Farm Complex.
