Sts. Simon and Jude gets $10,000 in books
A Huntington Beach Catholic school received $10,000 for new books
last week after one of the school’s parents won a contest through
Target.
Laurie Martinez, whose first-grade son attends Sts. Simon and Jude
Catholic Elementary School on Magnolia Street, won $5,000 in spending
money and was allowed to select her school of choice to receive
$10,000 toward new books. She won in a Target contest that rewarded
one random user of a Target Visa card.
The school, which had an assembly last week celebrating the new
funds, will share the $10,000 with its sister school, St. Joseph’s in
Santa Ana, librarian Lynne Deakers said.
“This is going to enable us to upgrade our collection of
nonfiction material at the elementary level,” Deakers said. “We
really lucked out.”
In addition to the $10,000, every one of the school’s 670 students
received a hardback book at the assembly courtesy of Target through
its “Ready Sit Read” campaign, Deakers said.
