Season ends for 3 teams
The 2003 prep football season has come to an end for three local high
schools.
While Huntington Beach, Marina and Ocean View each were playing
for pride in their season finales, Edison was playing for a piece of
the Sunset League championship when it took on the Oilers.
The Chargers gained a portion of the crown, too, and a berth in
Friday’s CIF playoffs, as they blanked Huntington, 35-0, at Cap Sheue
Field.
Edison took command of the game following a scoreless first
quarter.
Joshua Gage scored on a two-yard run for the game’s first score
and Matt White returned a punt 83 yards for a touchdown, the two
scoring plays giving the Chargers a 14-0 lead at the half.
A 14-point third period put the game away, as Nate Mitani took in
a 35-yard touchdown pass from Brian Shrock and Gage scored from 36
yards out on a lateral pass from White.
In the fourth quarter, Tyler Slaton scored on one-yard run.
It was the first shutout loss of the season for Huntington, which
ended its year at 2-8 overall and 1-4 in Sunset League play.
Marina also was on the end of a Sunset League shutout, as Los
Alamitos, also fighting to share the league title, blanked the
Vikings, 28-0, at Westminster High.
Behind a defense that had held the Griffins in check throughout
much of the first half, Marina was within 3-0 late in the second
quarter. But a flee-flicker pass from Jimmy Barnes to Bryan Gordon
resulted in a 47-yard touchdown, and an interception led to a
Barnes-to-Jeremy Childs 20-yard touchdown pass with seconds
remaining, that allowed Los Al to take control at the half, 18-0.
Like Huntington, it was the first shutout loss of the year for
Marina, which concluded its campaign with an overall record of 3-7.
The Vikings went 1-4 in Sunset play.
Ocean View ended its first season a 48-14 Golden West League loss
to Saddleback at Santa Ana Bowl.
A pair of seniors put the Seahawks on the scoreboard in the final
quarter, as Luke Landri scored on a 13-yard run and Brett Burda
reached the end zone from seven yards out.
Senior Aaron Gonya accounted for 208 yards of offense for Ocean
View.
Gonya was the game’s top rusher with 158 yards and he also had one
pass completion for 48 yards.
Ocean View ended its season with an overall record of 2-8 and 1-5
in league play.
