Pirates sweep Ventura

Orange Coast College freshman outside hitter Donka Drozd set the tone

Saturday night for the second-seeded Pirates with four straight kills

to start the match as OCC swept Ventura, 30-20, 30-24, 30-26 in the

second round of the Southern California regional playoffs at OCC.

The Pirates (19-2) will host the L.A. Pierce-Irvine Valley winner

in the third round at 7 p.m. Tuesday, with the winner advancing to

the state tournament Dec. 5-7.

Christine Woller led OCC with 21 kills and nine digs, while Drozd

finished with 13 kills and five blocks.

Ventura fell to 15-4.

Bobik sparks OCC rally

* BASKETBALL: Orange Coast College guard Aaron Bobik scored a

game-high 19 points and helped spark a second-half rally as the

Pirates’ men’s basketball team defeated Cuyamaca, 70-54, in a

consolation semifinal Saturday at the Citrus tournament.

OCC (1-3) trailed at halftime, 31-29, and following a 33-33 tie in

the second half, the Pirates enjoyed a 20-5 scoring run over an 8:50

span to lead by 15.

The Pirates’ biggest lead of the game was 70-53 after two free

throws by Jibri Taylor (13 points). Jason Garey (11), Alex Hunter (10) and Micah Young (10) also scored in double figures. Cuyamaca

fell to 0-5.

Mt. SAC downs OCC

* BASKETBALL: Orange Coast College’s women’s basketball team (3-3)

was defeated by Mt. San Antonio Saturday, 70-46, in the semifinals of

the Ventura tournament despite receiving 14 points from freshman

Rhondi Naff.

Young sisters ousted

* TENNIS: Twin sisters Hayley Young and Miranda Young of Newport

Beach lost to fourth-seeded Emily Aston and Tania Mahtani, both of

Rancho Palos Verdes, in the quarterfinals Saturday in the United

States Tennis Association girls 16s national open championships at

Costa Mesa Tennis Center.

Aston and Mahtani also won in the semifinals over the top seed and

will face second-seeded Nadia Abdala (Chula Vista) and Rebecca Lin

(San Diego) in the final at 1 p.m. today.

In singles, top-seeded Logan Hansen (Santa Monica) will face

fourth-seeded Julie Chao (San Diego) in a semifinal at 9 a.m. today,

while eighth-seeded Lyndsay Kinstler (Downey) will play

seventh-seeded Leyla Entekhabi (Agoura) in another semifinal at 9

a.m.

The singles final is at noon today.

UC Irvine finishes red hot

* VOLLEYBALL: The UC Irvine women’s volleyball team, ending the

season on a hot streak with victories in seven of its last eight

matches, found a groove after dropping the first game as the

Anteaters defeated Texas-Christian, 19-30, 30-23, 30-17, 30-16 at the Baden Thanksgiving tournament Saturday at Long Beach State.

A trio of UCI players reached double-digit kill figures, led by

outside hitter Kelly Wing (27). Middle blocker Sami Cash and outside

hitter Terbrie Taylor each had 10 kills for UCI (23-9), which

concluded its regular season.

Anteater setter Ashlie Hain put together her 24th double-double of

the season with 56 assists and 12 digs, while libero Brenda Waterman

led all players with 15 digs.

UCI opposite Dana Kurzbard and middle blocker Amanda Vazquez

recorded 12 and 10 total blocks, respectively. Kurzbard’s 12 blocks

was a career high, while the junior also added a career-best 11 block

assists.

TCU fell to 20-16.

Waves shock ‘Eaters

* WATER POLO: Junior Morgan Matthies scored the game-winning goal

with one second left to give Pepperdine an 11-10 victory over UC

Irvine in a consolation semifinal of the Mountain Pacific Sports

Federation men’s water polo tournament at Belmont Plaza Saturday.

UCI sophomore Chris Peters had tied the game on a goal with 11

seconds remaining. The contest was tied 4-4 at halftime and 7-7 after

three quarters. This was the third meeting of the season between the

teams with Pepperdine winning two.

Senior Phil Garcia led Coach Ted Newland’s seventh-seeded

Anteaters (12-16) with three extra-man goals while juniors Dan Noon

and Rick Merlo added two goals each.

Sophomore goalie Joe Wynne had nine saves for UCI, which faces UC

Santa Barbara in the seventh-place game at noon today.

UCI swimmer honored

* SWIMMING: Lara Bjargardottir, a sophomore on the UC Irvine

women’s swim team, was named the Big West Conference Athlete of the

Week for her performance at the Speedo Cup last weekend.

Bjargardottir broke the UCI record in the 400 individual medley

event with a time of 4:20.31, which gave her a third-place finish at

the Speedo Cup.

She also placed fourth in the 200 breaststroke (2:18.45).

Bjargardottir earned three top-5 finishes to go with a second-place

finish in the 200 IM.

Roche sparks Cypress

* SOCCER: Katie Roche, a four-year varsity member of the Costa

Mesa High girls soccer team, is a sophomore defender for the Cypress

women’s team, which reached its ninth straight final four with a 1-0

victory over host San Diego Mesa Tuesday in the Southern California

regional final.

Cypress (19-0-2) has posted 14 shutouts and outscored opponents,

112-3, this season. The Chargers have won eight consecutive Orange

Empire Conference crowns.

Roche, a second-team All-CIF Southern Section Division IV

selection as a sweeper in 2001, earned Co-Most Valuable Player honors

in the Pacific Coast League that year.

The semifinals and final will be held Dec. 6-7 in Lemoore.
