Gorbachev to visit UC Irvine on March 23

Former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev will visit UC Irvine on

March 23 to accept the inaugural UCI Citizen Peacebuilding Award and

speak about the importance of a sustainable environment.

Gorbachev served as leader of the Soviet Union from 1985 to 1991

and started political reforms that led to its dissolution. He won the

Nobel Peace Prize in 1990.

Since then, he has founded Green Cross International and other

organizations that deal with global issues.

He will speak on “The Road to a Sustainable Environment and a

Safer World” at 7 p.m. at the Irvine Barclay Theatre. The award,

given for his effect on world peace, will thereafter be named for

Helping cancer patients look and feel good

The American Cancer Society will offer its “Look Good ... Feel

Better” beauty class for cancer patients from 10 a.m. to noon April

12 at Hoag Hospital, 1 Hoag Drive, Newport Beach. The class, taught

with the help of the National Cosmetology Assn. and the Cosmetic,

Toiletry and Fragrance Assn., teaches cancer patients how to do

makeup and offers wig and turban tips to help cover the effects of

radiation and chemotherapy treatments. Trained beauty experts work

individually with cancer patients to teach beauty techniques. The

class is free.
