Motschenbacher sinks two eagles
Newport Harbor High senior David Motschenbacher sank two long eagle
putts in a nine-hole round, including one from 50 feet, and carded a
1-under-par 35 to earn medalist honors on Tuesday as the visiting
Sailors defeated Laguna Hills, 182-201, in a Sea View League boys
golf match at Leisure World Golf Course.
Motschenbacher drained a 15-foot putt on the par-5 No. 6 and
finished his memorable round with a 50-foot python putt on the par-5
No. 9
Rhett Palmer (36), Davis Pemstein (37), Mike Benvenuit (37) and
Brandon Sowers (37) also scored for Newport Harbor, which improved to
6-5, 2-2 in league. The Hawks fell to 1-3 in league.
The Sailors host Woodbridge today in an important Sea View League
match at Santa Ana Country Club.
Via leads Mustangs
* Senior Brett Via of Costa Mesa High made four pars and a birdie
on the par-5 No. 5 and completed his nine-hole round at 5-over-par 40
on Tuesday to finish as medalist as the host Mustangs edged
Westminster, 237-238, in Golden West League action.
Costa Mesa (4-7, 2-0 in league) was also led by Brian Beach (41),
Robert Angle (50), Al Rodriguez (51), Robin Schuppert (55).
The Lions fell to 1-1 in league.
Costa Mesa will play crosstown rival Estancia on Thursday at Costa
Mesa Golf & Country Club.
Eagles’ Sostak sizzles again
* Sophomore Marcus Sostak shot under par for the third straight
time, earning medalist honors with a two-under-par 36 in Estancia
High’s 208-233 Golden West League boys golf victory over Ocean View
at Mile Square Golf Course Tuesday.
The Les brothers, Greg and Jason, both shot 42, while Austin Serr
(44) and Garrett McMasters (46) also contributed to the victory for
the Eagles (7-3, 3-0 in league).
“He’s having a really good year,” Estancia Coach Art Perry said of
Sostak. “He works hard and he plays everyday. He’s just really
dedicated.”
Estancia will resume play Thursday at 2 p.m. facing crosstown
rival Costa Mesa at Costa Mesa Golf and Country Club in the first of
two meetings this season. The matches will have added meaning this
season, as the golf teams will be playing for the inaugural Scott
Cup, named after boosters Jim and Joan.
The winner of the two rounds will be treated to dinner at Newport
Rib Co.
“The winner will keep the cup at the restaurant so everyone can
look at it there,” Perry said. “This is the first year and we will
keep it going.”
Corona del Mar hot in win
* Senior Alex Chikovani shot his best round of the season, earning
medalist honors with a one-under-par 36 to lead the Corona del Mar
High boys golf team to a 191-211 Pacific Coast League victory over
University at Rancho San Joaquin Golf Club Tuesday.
Chikovani’s performance included four birdies, starting with the
first hole and then ending with the final three. Chikovani, along
with Ben Tilsen, Zach Rabinovich, Robert Ury and Jamie Bloom combined
for Corona del Mar’s lowest score of the season.
Tilsen and Rabinovich were both one-over par, while Ury and Bloom
shot 41.
The Sea Kings will face Esperanza today at 2:30 p.m. at Newport
Beach Country Club.
