CdM girls undefeated
The Corona del Mar High girls swim team remained undefeated with a
103.5-67.5 Pacific Coast League victory over host Tesoro Wednesday.
In the boys meet, Corona del Mar junior Bryan Buhagiar won the
200-yard freestyle (1:53.25) and the 100 backstroke (57.1), but the
Sea Kings lost to Tesoro, 112-104.
Kim McKay, Ashley Chandler, Jordan Anae, Jacqueline Duzac, Vivian
Liao and Katie Indvik were individual winners for the CdM girls (3-0,
2-0 in league). McKay won in the 200 free (2:04.64), Chandler in the
200 individual medley (2:20.89), Anae in the 50 free (26.75), Duzac
in the 100 butterfly (1:02.84), Liao in the 100 free (55.57) and
Indvik in the 100 breaststroke (1:15.07).

UCI shuts out foe
* TENNIS: The UC Irvine women’s tennis team shut out its second
straight opponent and won its fifth match in a row with a 7-0 Big
West Conference victory against host Cal State Fullerton Wednesday.
Junior Anna Bentzer, who was named the conference’s athlete of the
week for the fourth time this season, defeated Ruya Inapulat, 6-0,
6-4, and teamed with Jayme Hu to claim a 9-8 victory in doubles for
UCI (13-7, 6-2 in the Big West).
Bentzer’s four honors equal the conference’s single-season and
career records set by former Anteater Jonni Seymour.
UCI senior Tiffany Chang swept Gina Le, 6-0, 6-0, while Hui Leow
won the final two sets against Ioana Sisoe.
The ‘Eaters compete in the conference championships April 22-25 in
Indian Wells.

Sea Kings rule Titans
* VOLLEYBALL: The Corona del Mar High boys volleyball team
improved to 3-0 in the Pacific Coast League with a 25-21, 28-26,
25-20 victory over visiting Tesoro Wednesday.
Brothers Tom and Kevin Welch tallied 19 and 16 kills, respectively, while Kevin Welch had two aces in jump serving for
seven straight points during a key stretch in the third game.
Setter Dominic Rubino tallied 37 assists while Tom Welch and Shane
Collins each had four digs to go with three digs by Austin Brawner
for CdM (10-7, 3-0 in league), ranked third in CIF Southern Section
Division II.
CdM Coach Steve Conti said his team eliminated some unforced
errors and played with more confidence.
The two teams face one another at 5:30 p.m. Friday at Tesoro.
UCI upends Gauchos
* VOLLEYBALL: The UC Irvine men’s volleyball team, ranked ninth,
kept its postseason hopes alive with a 30-25, 30-24, 27-30, 30-26
Mountain Pacific Sports Federation victory over No. 8 UC Santa
Barbara Wednesday at Crawford Court.
Pelzel led UCI with 15 kills and three block assists. Matt Webber
had 14 kills, while freshman Jayson Jablonksy recorded 13 kills.
Senior middle blocker Kyle Weichert added 10 kills without an error
on 14 attempts. Brett Reid totaled 59 set assists in the win for the
Anteaters (13-17, 7-14 in the MPSF), who own the eighth and final
spot to compete in the MPSF championships with one game to play.
Tilsen, Miller end fourth
* GOLF: The Corona del Mar High duo of Ben Tilsen and Eric Miller
finished fourth in the Keppel Classic for boys golf at El Prado Golf
Course Wednesday.
Tilsen and Miller produced a 68 on the par-72, 18-hole Chino Creek
course. They played in a two-man, best-fall format, meaning the
lowest score from the duo was used for competition.
In junior varsity, a three-man, total-score format, Cody Stuart
(80), Matt Story (80) and Scott Leimauhler (81) finished fifth on the
par 72 Butterfield course.
Newport boys fall
* SWIMMING: Michael Bury, Daniel Furman and Eric Carlson won an
event each, but the Newport Harbor High boys swim team lost to Sea
View League host Aliso Niguel, 94-75, Wednesday.
Bury won the 100-yard butterfly (58.7), while Furman won the 50
freestyle (23.11) and Carlson took first in the 100 backstroke
(59.7). Newport dropped to 2-3, 0-3 in league.
Pirates blow 2-0 lead
* VOLLEYBALL: The visiting Irvine Valley College men’s volleyball
team survived a match point in the fourth game and erased a 2-0
deficit to claim a 18-30, 41-43, 30-27, 33-30, 15-13 Orange Empire Conference win over Orange Coast Wednesday.
Kaimana Kamalani led the Pirates (15-3, 7-2 in the OEC) with a
season-high 24 kills to go with 12 digs and two aces.
Teammate Poyer Poia slammed 21 kills and added 10 digs and three
blocks while Jon Larson tallied 12 kills.
Turpin 6th in heptathlon
* TRACK AND FIELD: UC Irvine senior Annmarie Turpin is in sixth
place after the first day of competition in the Mt. San Antonio
Relays Heptathlon at Azusa Pacific University Wednesday.
Turpin has 3,182 points after the first four events. Kim
Vanderhoek of the Calgary Spartans is in first with 3,456.
Turpin, who has the most points in the field, had marks of 14.49
in the 100-meter hurdles, 5-7 1/4 in the high jump, 36-1 1/4 in the
shot put and 25.85 in the 200.
In the California Invitational Decathlon at Azusa Pacific,
Anteater senior Jon Stewart is in 13th place in the A Division with
3,422 points after five events and freshman Eric Nyberg is 10th in
Division B with 3,235 points. The heptathlon concludes today with
competition in the long jump, javelin and 800.
Wolverines subdue Tars
* GOLF: Mike Vackar and Brandon Sowers each shot 1-over-par 37,
but it was not enough as host Newport Harbor High dropped a Sea View
League boys golf match, 187-193, to Aliso Niguel Wednesday.
Chris Willard carded a 39 while Rhett Palmer and Davis Pemstein
each shot 40 for Newport (7-8, 2-5 in league).
Aliso improved to 15-2, 5-1 in league.
Newport hosts Servite in a nonleague match at 3 p.m. Tuesday at
Big Canyon Country Club.
Sailors come close
* TENNIS: Newport Harbor High’s boys tennis team took an early
lead, but narrowly failed in its upset bit of visiting Santa Barbara,
which earned a 10-8 nonleague victory Wednesday.
The Sailors (10-5) led, 7-5, after the second round against the
Dons (13-0), ranked third in CIF Southern Section Division I.
Sophomore Robert Khoury lost just one game in sweeping in singles
while freshman Jake Fleming took two of three sets for Newport.
Fleming led junior Blake Muller, 5-4, before succumbing, 7-5.
Tyler Deck and Dylan Espley-Jones claimed two doubles sets while
Charlie Farmer and Ruslan Serydyk won one set and had three match
points against Greg Roberson and Greg Soulages in a tiebreaker won by
the Santa Barbara duo, 11-9.
The Tars host Aliso Niguel in a Sea View League match at 3:15 p.m.

Morton, a former Corona del Mar High standout, and Ryusuke

Lions go down early
* BASEBALL: Robert Klein struck out four and walked none in six
innings, but suffered the loss as the visiting Cal Baptist baseball
team took advantage of its opportunities to defeat Vanguard
University, 6-3, in a Golden State Athletic Conference game Tuesday.
Cal Baptist (21-16) scored four runs in the top of the third to
take a commanding 6-1 lead after Vanguard (10-27) took an early 1-0
edge.
Jason Searle had a hit, scored a run and tallied one RBI while
Adam Yoder singled and scored for Vanguard, which had seven hits
facing six Cal Baptist pitchers.
Matt Rodriguez went 2 for 4 with two runs scored and one RBI and
was the only Cal Baptist player with more than one hit.
