Police investigating possible murder
Four people, including two Huntington Beach residents, were
arrested on April 6 after police discovered a dead body in the back
of a truck they were in during a traffic stop in Riverside County.
Police arrested Huntington Beach residents Billy Johnson, 40, and
24-year-old Suzanne Miller. Costa Mesa residents Jason Karr, 39, and
Erin Brooks, 19, were also arrested. Huntington Beach officers made
the arrests after two cars were pulled over near the Moreno Valley
Freeway in Riverside.
No charges have been filed in the case.
“We anticipate charges in the near future,” Huntington Beach
police Sgt. Dave Bunetta said.
Police are still investigating the death of 26-year-old Laguna
Niguel resident Cory Lamons.
Bunetta said officers are working to reconstruct the series of
events from Lamons’ death to the discovery of his body.
“We have a body,” Bunetta said. “Now, we’re trying to work
backward to find the crime scene.”
Johnson and Miller were already wanted by police on a warrant for
methamphetamine sales, and Karr was wanted for alleged parole
violations.
Johnson, Miller and Karr are being held on the warrants. Brooks
was released pending further investigation, Bunetta said.
Police also identified Johnson as having connections to a white
supremacist gang called “Public Enemy No. 1,” Huntington Beach police
Capt. Dan Johnson said.
Witnesses sought in fatal hit-and-run
Huntington Beach police are asking for help in the investigation
of a fatal hit-and-run crash in January.
Police found the dark green 1998 Dodge Caravan they believe struck
59-year-old Fountain Valley resident James Litwicki on the night of
Jan. 17 or morning of Jan. 18 near the intersection of the San Diego
Freeway and Magnolia Street. Officers believe the van was driven by a
woman with dark hair.
Litwicki died of his injuries at UC Irvine Medical Center on Jan.
21.
Police found the van based on information they received from a
descriptive anonymous tip, Huntington Beach police Sgt. Dave Bunetta
said.
Investigators don’t have enough evidence to file charges in the
crash, Bunetta said, and they don’t know if the van’s owner was
involved.
“We’ve recovered the vehicle, however the person in control of the
vehicle has not been cooperative with police,” Bunetta said.
Police are asking any witnesses to come forward with information.
Possible witnesses can call traffic investigator Bob Barr at (714)
536-5666.
Two teenagers stabbed in fight
Police have no suspects in a double-stabbing of two teenage men
that was reported Saturday night.
Police would not release the names of the victims, 18- and
19-year-old Costa Mesa residents, to protect their safety.
The 18-year-old was stabbed with a knife, the 19-year-old with a
beer bottle, Huntington Beach police Sgt. Dave Bunetta said.
Both men were treated and released at Hoag Hospital in Newport
Beach.
At about 10:24 p.m., police received a call that a fight involving
two large groups of people was happening around the beach near the
intersection of Pacific Coast Highway and Huntington Street, Bunetta
said.
Police believe each group had between 10 and 15 people. Most of
the people fighting scattered after the police helicopter showed up,
Bunetta said.
While officers questioned people in the area, they learned the two
victims were already taken to Hoag Hospital.
The attackers are believed to be men between 18 and 20, police
said.
Teens accused of stealing goods
Two Huntington Beach teenagers were arrested and charged with
burglary after a break-in at Kettler Elementary School.
Police arrested the two 15-year-old boys near the school carrying
stolen equipment, Bunetta said. They were also charged with
vandalism. The break-in was reported to police at about 4:20 p.m. on
Saturday.
“A witness in the area of Kettler school saw a couple of people
break out some windows,” Huntington Beach police Sgt. Dave Bunetta
said.
The pair is accused of stealing computer equipment from the
school, which is in the 8700 block of Dorsett Drive.
The boys were taken to Orange County Juvenile Hall.
Murder suspect’s arraignment delayed
The arraignment for a man accused of murdering a Huntington Beach
clerk was continued to May 20.
John Steadman Nilsen, 46, of Los Angeles, is charged with armed
robbery and the murder of 19-year-old Huntington Beach resident
Shawna Wolfgram.
Wolfgram was fatally shot during an armed robbery at the 99 Cents
Only Store in the 16600 block of Beach Boulevard. Nilsen was arrested
at his Los Angeles residence on March 24.
Nilsen could face the death penalty if convicted.
Arrest in suspected DUI accident
A person was arrested Wednesday morning on suspicion of driving
under the influence after crash in Huntington Beach.
California Highway Patrol officers have not released the name of
the driver, who was taken to Huntington Beach Memorial Hospital for
treatment of unspecified injuries.
At about 4:42 a.m. the driver struck a light pole on the Beach
Boulevard off-ramp while exiting the southbound San Diego Freeway. No
other vehicles were involved in the accident.
Because the crash happened at the bottom of the off-ramp in the
early morning, traffic was not affected, CHP Officer Denise Quesada
said.
