Vikings advance to Big West tournament semifinal round
The Marina High baseball team advanced Monday to the semifinal round
of the Wienerschnitzel Big West Invitational with 5-3 victory over
University at Windrow Park in Irvine.
Justin Sellers had three hits and an RBI and Adam Rodriguez
singled twice with an RBI to lead the Vikings on offense.
Matt Candlish, in relief of starter Robbie McIntee, recorded the
pitching win.
Brandon Parillo pitched the seventh and got the save.
Marina had opened the tournament with a 16-3 drubbing of Brea
Olinda.
Brian Ward hit a two-run home run and Matt Candlish notched the
pitching win for the Vikings, who racked up 15 hits off three Wildcat
pitchers.
Sellers doubled and Adam Rodriguez tripled for Marina, which led,
7-0, after two innings.
Ward finished the game with five RBIs.
Candlish went the distance and gave up just three hits.
In other tournament action, Hank Conger’s bat is a big reason the
Huntington Beach High baseball team was able to defeat Capistrano
Valley in the Oilers’ Big West Invitational opener.
Conger smashed a three-run home run and also knocked in another
run to lead the Oilers in a 4-2 win over Capistrano Valley in a
first-round tournament game.
The sophomore Conger delivered his first RBI when his single up
the middle scored Cameron McMullen, who began the game with a single.
Conger then upped Huntington’s lead to 4-0 in the top-half of the
third when he took a fast ball over the fence in right-centerfield.
Jordan Hargrave and Jake Sellberg hit back-to-back singles with
two out in the frame, setting up Conger.
Hargrave got the pitching win and Justin LaTempa struck out four
in relief of Hargrave.
The Oilers, however, fell in their second tournament outing in a
12-4 loss Monday to Northwood.
Ocean View downed La Quinta Monday, 3-1, at the Coachella Valley
Tournament.
Reliever Joe Jameson got the win and the Seahawks notched the
victory despite getting just three hits.
Ocean View won by scoring two runs in the top-half of the seventh
to break a 1-1 tie.
In Sunset League baseball, Huntington suffered its first league
loss in a 4-2 setback to visiting Fountain Valley.
Nick Rotkowitz hit a two-run home run as the Barons recorded their
first league win to improve to 1-6.
Nathan Keadle had an RBI for the Oilers, who are now 6-1 in
league.
Two days earlier, Huntington had beat the Barons by an identical
4-2 score.
Hank Conger hit a solo homer in the fifth and finished with a pair
of RBIs.
Starter Nathan Keadle got the pitching win and Jordan Hargrave got
the save in relief action.
Marina scored five runs over the last three innings to pull away
from host Esperanza, 7-2.

doubled, tripled and knocked in four RBIs to power the Vikings.
Chris Torres also added a double.
Brooks Walling’s four-hitter, which included five strikeouts,
helped Marina get past league rival Esperanza, 1-0, in the league
opener for both schools.
Robby McIntee was hit by a pitch with bases loaded to force home
Marina’s only run, which was scored in the fifth.
Edison blanked visiting Los Alamitos, 1-0, as T.J. Marcin and Chad
Blauer combined to four-hit the Griffins.
Wes Kinkopf knocked in the game’s lone run in the second inning.
It was Edison’s second one-run victory over Los Alamitos in two
days.
In a previous meeting, the Chargers shaded the host Griffins, 3-2.
Nate Mitani hit a two-run homer in the fifth. John Timoti finished
with an RBI and Tommy Palica recorded the pitching win.
In Golden West League play, Ocean View downed visiting Santa Ana,
4-1.
Derek Walsh capped the game’s scoring with a two-run home run in
the bottom of the sixth.
Brett Burda and Bear Wurts had an RBI each for the Seahawks.
In softball action, Huntington played host Woodbridge tough in a
3-1 loss to the Warriors at the Woodbridge Softball Classic.
Oiler starer Holly Jackson allowed the Warriors just two hits
until the ninth inning, where she gave up a triple and three runs.
Andrea Mansfield brought home Huntington’s lone run with an RBI
single in the bottom of the ninth.
The Oilers bounced back Monday to defeat Villa Park, 4-2, as
Michele Ayache, in relief work, got the pitching win.
Also at the tournament, Marina was blanked by Corona, 2-0, and
Valencia, 1-0.
In Sunset League softball, Krystina Ramirez pitched Edison past
host Marina, 1-0.
Ramirez gave up three hits to the Vikings to notch her seventh win
and Vanessa Hardway picked up an RBI in the second inning.
Edison had opened league play with a 4-0 loss to visiting Los
Alamitos.
Huntington was shut out by host Esperanza, 4-0.
In Golden West League softball, Ocean View was edged by visiting
Santa Ana, 1-0.
In boys’ volleyball, Ocean View moved to 4-1 in Golden West League
play with a 25-15, 15-25, 25-15, 15-6 victory at Saddleback.
In boys’ golf, Joey Benedetti medaled with a score of 33 to lead
Huntington past Edison, 187-197, at SeaCliff Country Club.
Edison’s Brandon Plummer and Joel Gillin medaled at 36 as Edison
and Fountain Valley tied, 198-198, at Mile Square Park, but the
victory went to the Chargers based on the sixth player score.
