CdM wins thriller
Chris Ringstrom, Brandon Borcoman, Kirk Moses and Kevin Artz teamed
to win the 1,600-meter relay, leading the Corona del Mar High boys
track and field team to a thrilling 66-61 victory over Pacific Coast
League visitor Northwood in the last event Wednesday.
The CdM girls easily won, 92-35, to close out the dual-meet
season, 9-0, 5-0 in league.
Heading into the final boys event, the Sea Kings and Northwood
were tied, 61-61. Ringstrom and Borcoman gave CdM an 80-yard cushion
and Moses and Artz contributed to the 3:32.7 finish. The Timberwolves
finished in 3:40.7.
Ringstrom also won the 100 (11.0) and 200 (23.0), while Borcoman
came in first in the 400 (52.0). Ringstrom and Borcoman also were on
the victorious 400 relay team that included Cliff Taylor and Scott
Caput. Artz was also a double winner for the Sea Kings (7-2, 5-0),
winning the 800 (2:06.2) and 1,600 (4:36.8).
Avery Fenton and Zach Wishengrad won the discus (124 feet, 8
inches) and shot put (42-0 1/2), respectively.
On the girls side, Tiffany Liu tripled, while Hilary May and
Lindsay Ensign won two events each. Liu came in first in both
hurdles, the 100 (16.7) and 300 (52.6), and the triple jump (33-8
1/2). May won the 800 (2:22.5) and the 3,200 (12:15.0), and Ensign
the high jump (4-11) and shot put (30-4).
Anne St. Geme (5:07.7, 1,600), Kelly Morgan (27.4, 200) and
Melissa Swigert (1:00.6, 400) were also individual winners. Whitney
Weidner came in a first-place tie in the 100 and contributed to CdM’s
winning 400 relay.
The Sea Kings will compete in the PCL preliminaries Tuesday at
2:30 p.m. at Irvine. The finals are May 7 at 4:30 p.m., also at
Irvine.
Estancia sweeps Saints
* VOLLEYBALL: The Estancia High boys volleyball team, playing
without starting opposite Josh Kornegay, remained undefeated in the
Golden West League with a 25-8, 25-7, 25-17 victory over host Santa
Ana Wednesday.
Kris Hartwell, who is usually plays as outside hitter, moved over
to opposite and led the Eagles (17-4, 10-0 in league) with 10 kills.
Scott Sankey and Dallas Kopp added two solo blocks each. Trevor
Holmes contributed 22 assists and four aces.
Mesa downs Orange
* VOLLEYBALL: Andrew Melcer’s defense inspired Costa Mesa High to
sweep, 25-17, 25-11, 25-18, Golden West League rival Orange
Wednesday.
The Mustangs, tied with Orange going into the match, sit alone in
fourth in league at 4-5. It was only the second sweep of the season
for Costa Mesa.
Melcer hustled for 11 digs and handed out 23 assists.
Mitch Mandel led the Mustangs with 12 kills, Garrett Walthers
contributed six kills and three blocks and sophomore Ryan French
added three key kills and several hustle plays.
Sailors blank University
* BASEBALL: Newport Harbor High shut out Sea View League rival
University, 4-0, Wednesday. Taylor Young had an RBI double in the
fifth and an RBI single in the seventh to lead the Sailors. Senior
Mike McLean went 2 for 4 and scored twice to help improve Newport
Harbor to 10-10, 4-6 in Sea View action. Pitcher Joey Cantarella
struck out three and scattered five hits for a complete-game shutout.
Sage ties for second
* GOLF: Sage Hill School’s Josh Chen shot a 5-over-par 41 to tie
for medalist honors as the Lightning tied Capistrano Valley Christian
for second place in the Academy League boys golf standings with a
211-223 victory at Strawberry Farms Golf Club in Irvine Wednesday.
Sage and CVC each finished 6-4 in league, but only one will
advance to the CIF team playoffs, Sage Coach Erik Gnagy said. Gnagy
was unsure of the league’s tiebreaker scenario.
Rob Greenfield shot 42 while John Neff (44), Ryan Babbush (47) and
Alex Cochran (48) also scored for Sage Hill.
CdM girls win again
* SWIMMING: Corona del Mar High’s Kim McKay, Ashley Chandler and
Bryan Buhagiar won two events each Wednesday when the Sea Kings’
girls swim team won and the boys lost to Pacific Coast League visitor
Northwood Wednesday.
Buhagiar was the lone first-place finisher for the CdM boys (0-4
in league), winning the 100-yard freestyle (50.60) and 100 backstroke
(57.80). The Sea Kings lost, 102-68.
The Corona del Mar girls (5-0, 4-0 in league) remained undefeated
with a 103.5-66.5 victory and won eight of the 11 events. McKay won
the 200 individual medley (2:15.16) and the 500 free (5:25.18), while
Chandler took first in the 100 free (54.83) and 100 back (1:01.94).
Both girls also contributed to the victorious 200 free relay
(1:45.38) that included Jordan Anae and Vivian Liao, as well.
Liao (26.49 in the 50 free) and Tumua Anae (1:12.39, 100
breaststroke) were also individual winners.
The CdM girls were without Lexie Shue, Stephanie Gabert and
Jacqueline Duzac. Shue and Gabert had training with their club team,
and Duzak was sick.
Newport splits meet
* SWIMMING: Leah Robertson and Kayley Oka won two events each to
lead the Newport Harbor High girls to a 106-63 Sea View League
victory over visiting Woodbridge Wednesday. The Sailors’ boys lost,
94-76.
Robertson took first in the 50-yard freestyle (25.03) and the 100
free (54.91), while Oka won the 100 butterfly (1:00.64) and 100 backstroke (1:04.63). Robertson also anchored Newport’s winning 200
and 400 free relays. Melissa Wheeler, with a 5:27.37 in the 500 free,
and Ashling Taylor, a 1:21.71 in the 100 breaststroke, contributed
one victory each.
Daniel Furman and Sean McGhie won the 50 free (22.32) and 100 free
(49.88), respectively. McGhie and Furman, along with Kyle Sherman and
Telford Cottam were first in the 200 free relay (1:32.50).
CdM perfect in PCL
* VOLLEYBALL: Kevin Welch had 17 kills and Dominic Rubino
distributed 29 assists in leading Corona del Mar High to a 25-18,
25-23, 25-17, sweep of University. The Sea Kings improved to 16-9,
10-0 in the Pacific Coast League and travel to Calvary Chapel Friday.
‘Hawks silence Mesa
* SOFTBALL: Courtney McLaughlan’s grand slam highlighted a six-run
third inning for the host Ocean View High softball team, which
cruised to a 9-0 Golden West League victory over Costa Mesa
Wednesday.
Paulina Rodriguez (double) and Uyen Mai tallied the only hits for
the Mustangs (6-18, 2-6 in league) against Ocean View starter Jerian
Isfeld and a reliever.
Mesa senior Jane-E Yamamoto allowed just two runs in 3 2/3 innings
of relief of starter Jackie Butler, who exited because of arm pain in
the third, Mesa Coach Sharon Uhl said.
Lions’ rally falls short
* BASEBALL: The Vanguard University baseball team nearly overcame
a five-run deficit with three runs in the ninth inning, but came up
short, 8-6, to host UC San Diego in a nonconference game Wednesday.
UCSD (31-21) finished with 20 hits, while the Lions (12-32) had
12. Isaac Salazar, David Hudgins, Jason Searle, Scott Martin,
Nikolaus Crouch and Mike Sparks collected two hits each. Searle led
Vanguard with two RBIs.
OCC seeded first
* CREW: The Orange Coast College men’s crew will be seeded No. 1
in the varsity eight race in the Western Intercollegiate Rowing
Association championships, which begin Saturday in Lake Natoma in
Folsom.
OCC, which won the Cal Cup April 4 in Mission Bay, will be in a
seven-boat heat that will include Sacramento State, UC Davis and Long
Beach State among others. The finals will be Sunday.
The Pirates are also the top seed in the novice and second novice
eight races and seeded No. 2 in the varsity B race.
