Marina takes third

Huntington Beach schools put on a strong showing Saturday at the

Orange County Championships in cross county competition at Irvine

Regional Park.

With Robert Peck finishing in fifth place with a time of 15:13 and

teammate Jesse Morrill right behind in sixth place, also with a

15:13, Marina’s boys finished third in the Sweepstakes Race.

In the boys’ Division III team standings, Huntington Beach ran up

114 points to finish in fourth place.

The Oilers’ Gabe Ornelas was Huntington’s top finisher with a run

of 15:37, which gave him a second-place finish behind winner Conrad

Wozniak (15:33) of Woodbridge.

There was a one-two finish by Sunset League teams as Edison was

runner-up to Fountain Valley in the girls’ Sweepstakes Race team

scores.

The division team overall winner was Corona del Mar with 52

points.

In girls’ volleyball, Huntington swept Fountain Valley, 25-14,

25-20, 25-19, in Sunset League play.

Edison dropped a tough match to Los Alamitos, 26-24, 23-25, 23-25,

29-27, 9-15, and Esperanza defeated Marina, 25-14, 25-14, 25-18.

In girls’ tennis, Huntington Beach defeated Edison, 11-7.

Lauren Pascoe swept at No. 1 singles and sisters Amy and Stacy

Kaufman swept at No. 1 doubles for the Oilers.

In boys’ water polo, Huntington Beach routed El Rancho, 15-8, and

edged El Segundo, 9-8, in consolation round play at the North Orange

County Tournament.

The Oilers also were defeated by Northwood, 12-4.

In the CIF-Southern Section sports rankings released Monday,

Edison’s girls’ cross country team was voted No. 1 in Division II.

Edison’s boys were rated fifth in Division II.

In girls’ volleyball, Edison came in at No. 3 and Huntington was

right behind the Chargers at No. 4 in the Division II-AA rankings.

In girls’ tennis, Huntington was ranked seventh and Edison eighth

in the Division II poll.

In boys’ water polo, the Division II poll had Marina ranked fifth

and Huntington ninth, while Edison received votes but just missed a

Top 10 spot.

In football, Edison retained its No. 6 ranking in Division I after

its 49-10 victory over Huntington Beach.

The loss knocked the Oilers out of the Top 10, but they still did

receive votes in the polling.
